Today’s KC Royals news focuses on Kyle Zimmer and his first start for the Kansas City Royals. Opening day of Spring Training counts for something right?

The KC Royals are now just two days away from their first Spring Training day. The longest, short off-season in seemingly ever, is about to be over as real baseball will really be happening.

It’s real in the sense that an opposing pitcher will be throwing to an opposing batter. Umpires will be on hand, and a box score will exist after the game. Aside from that it’s still pretty much practice.

One of the Royals’ top prospects will be making the opening day start. While it’s not something that should carry a lot of weight, it means a lot to the Royals and their fans to see Kyle Zimmer take the mound.

Kyle Zimmer was a highly touted prospect coming out of college and was taken fifth overall in the 2012 draft. He was thought to be a player would quickly rise through the Minor League ranks and start pitching for the ‘big’ team.

His arm had other ideas as he has struggled with injuries in every season since being drafted. He appears to finally be healthy and a strong showing at the end of 2015 has him primed to make a run at the rotation.

"Obviously, in the grand scheme of things, this move means nothing. Zimmer, most likely, is still going to open the season in the minors, probably at Northwest Arkansas, where he finished last season. However, by bringing Zimmer into the KC Royals major league camp, he will get a taste of what it is like to face major league hitters, possibly speeding his development along."

While the opening day start at Spring Training doesn’t mean anything in terms of who the staff ‘ace’ will be, it goes a long way in making a statement.

Kyle Zimmer starting a game, really any game, for the Royals should inspire confidence among the team and Royals’ fans alike. He’s been so riddled with injuries during his career and the Royals are declaring him injury free by granting him the start.

They may also be getting him ready for the preparation and anticipation that comes with the phrase ‘opening day starter’. Opening day starter for Spring Training and opening day starter for the regular season are miles apart, but keep in mind this will be Zimmer’s first start in a KC Royals’ jersey.

At the very minimum, this is a chance for Kyle Zimmer to play in front of the team he hopes to join very shortly. Fans will get a chance to see if the stats that Zimmer has put up in the minors will translate to the Major Leagues. Lastly, the Royals will get to see if Zimmer can deliver after all the time spent rehabbing and delaying his debut.
