The Kansas City Royals square off against the best team in the World today. If anyone can beat the Royals, maybe it’s the Royals themselves.

This intrasquad game figures to be rather unspectacular in nature. It doesn’t feature many players who are likely to see everyday action and is more of a practice than an actual game.

That being said, call it whatever you want. Call it a tune-up, or an audition, or a light stretching exercise, but it’s as close to a Royals’ game as fans will get, for at least another day or so. It’s not likely to last more than a few innings, but that doesn’t mean it won’t feel like actual baseball is happening.

A lineup was created, pitchers will toe the rubber without an L-screen present, hitters will run the bases, outs will be recorded, scores will be kept, and a host of overreactions and pointless analysis will follow.

One long home run, or one strikeout could be enough to anoint the next Royals’ great or denounce a player as a bust. While it’s not an indication of really anything, it’s still fun to speculate and make projections based on any kind of sample size. That includes one at-bat in this instance.

Josh Vernier, a reporter fo 610 Sports, tweeted the following information about where to get updates on the game:

While it’s not quite game cast, it’s still a way to get some information on the goings on from this short, practice game.

The Lineups don’t feature a lot of big names, but at least a couple of them are in the middle of position battles. The lineups for the game are as follows:

Home:

  1. Reymond Fuentes: Center Field
  2. Christian Colon: Second Base
  3. Brett Eibner: Right Field
  4. Travis Snider: Designated Hitter
  5. Balbino Fuenmayor: First Base
  6. Clint Barmes: Shortstop
  7. Hunter Dozier: Third Base
  8. Zane Evans: Catcher
  9. Terrance Gore: Left Field

Brian Flynn will get the start, with Jonathan Dziedzic, Christian Binford, and Alec Mills following him up.

Away:

  1. Raul Mondesi: Second Base
  2. Cheslor Cuthbert: Third Base
  3. Ramon Torres: Shortstop
  4. Paulo Orlando: Left Field
  5. Jose Martinez: Right Field
  6. Bubba Starling: Center Field
  7. Jorge Bonifacio: Designated Hitter
  8. Cody Decker: First Base
  9. Parker Morin: Catcher

Matthew Strahm will start for the away team, with Sam Selman and Brooks Pounders providing relief.

Each pitcher will probably only work for one inning or maybe even two if they get through their first inning quickly. This isn’t a time to start pushing the pitchers to eat up innings. It’s more a casual game-like event that lets people shake off some of the rust before the actual action begins.

The Kansas City Royals do have several top prospects playing in this game. The following players from this game have a prospect profile breakdown attached to each of their names:

While there likely isn’t meaning to anyone’s position in the order, there are at least a couple of interesting things to note.

More from KC Kingdom

  • Christian Colon and Raul Mondesi are both playing second base today.

Colon is already known to be battling for the starting second base job, but Raul Mondesi is playing out of position. He’s normally a shortstop, but the Royals already have a shortstop in Alcides Escobar. Could the Royals be prepared to take a look at Mondesi for the second base job also?

  • Paulo Orlando, who’s expected to split time with Jarrod Dyson in right field, is playing left field today for the away team.

Potential fifth outfielder options, Brett Eibner and Jose Martinez, are both getting the start in right field today. Travis Snider, who’s another outfield candidate, is slotted in at designated hitter. Are the Royals looking to choose between Eibner and Martinez for the fifth spot, or could their role be even larger than back-up player?

Again all of the assigned positions and spots in the lineup are probably pointless. The good news is, baseball is about to be played for real. At least kind of.
