The Kansas City Chiefs appear to be set at the quarterback position, but what about the backup quarterback? Could Carson Wentz be high on the Chiefs’ big board?

One of the hotly debated topics in Kansas City is about the Chiefs’ quarterback, Alex Smith. Is Alex Smith an elite quarterback? Does Alex Smith have what it takes to get the KC Chiefs to the Super Bowl? You’ve probably heard them all.

With all of this said, should the Kansas City Chiefs be looking to add another quarterback in this year’s draft?

If so, should they go for broke and draft one of the quarterbacks with the most upside? If they decide that’s something they want to do, chances are they’ll be looking at Carson Wentz out of North Dakota State.

While North Dakota State isn’t a well-known school when it comes to college football on a national level, Wentz has been part of a very successful program since joining the Bison in 2012.

He took over as the starting quarterbacking the Bison in 2014. According to the North Dakota State stat page, in his first season as the starter, he threw for 3,111 yards and 25 touchdowns, while rushing for 648 more, plus six more touchdowns.

It’s pretty huge when a quarterback from a small, Division I, Football Championship Series subdivision university is being pegged as one of the best quarterback prospects in this year’s draft.

Wentz went all out in 2015, tossing 17 touchdowns to only four interceptions and throwing for a total of 1,651 yards. What makes those stats more impressive is that fact that Wentz missed close to two months due to a wrist injury.

Now an argument could easily be made that Wentz wasn’t playing against the best competition, but he still has the skills of an NFL quarterback. NFL.com is even going as far to compare him to Blake Bortles, who has looked pretty darn good in his first two years in the pros.

The biggest question on his status with the Chiefs would be: Why draft him? Kansas City has Alex Smith locked up to at least four more seasons and while Chase Daniel is likely a goner and therefore no longer the backup, Wentz is too good a prospect to sit the bench for four years.

More from KC Kingdom

The KC Chiefs have apparently been linked with Carson Wentz, as reported by Eric Adelson of Yahoo Sports. They’ve even gone so far as to reach out to his high school coach.

While Wentz is considered to be a top ten prospect, he could find himself falling further down in the draft. Quarterback selection is tricky in the first round of the draft and this year’s crop of prospects aren’t the greatest.

If Wentz is still on the board when pick 28 rolls around, the Kansas City Chiefs could have a big decision to make regarding their quarterback situation in the future.

This would be a big move for the KC Chiefs. They haven’t selected a quarterback in the first round since Todd Blackledge in 1983.
