KC Royals News: Royals Stay Hungry

facebooktwitterreddit

Today’s KC Royals news focuses on what the Royals will do to avoid becoming complacent following a championship win.

When the Royals reported to Spring Training on Thursday, they arrived with a big target on their back. Every team in baseball is trying to steal their crown away from them and the Royals will have to avoid letting up on the gas.

If the Royals can make it back to the World Series in 2016, they’ll become the first of the expansion teams to accomplish that feat. They’ll also become the first team to accomplish that feat since the 1998-2001 Yankees who appeared in four straight Fall Classics.

The Royals are playing in what is widely regarded to be one of the most contested divisions in baseball. All of the teams in the division made improvements this off-season and the Royals could have a tough test on their hands. Don’t look for them to run away with the division this time around.

They still return most of their key players from last season and they have something the other teams don’t have. They have a team chemistry that is envied by every team in the league. They also never seem to figure out when they should give-up and go home. Look for them to fight until the last out every step of the way.

While the Royals need to avoid any complacency in their dugout, they appear to be as hungry as ever for a title run. Jarrod Dyson was quoted in an article for the Kansas City Star by Royals’ beat writer Rustin Dodd:

"“You don’t play the game to win one,” Dyson said, his voice echoing across the room. “(Michael) Jordan didn’t shut it down after winning one. Kobe didn’t shut it down after winning one. Why we gonna shut it down after winning one? We want to win as many possible.”"

"For younger fans, the hapless Royals of just a few years ago must seem like ancient history. For people who have been fans for many years, those terrible teams in the 1990’s and the first 13 years of this century are vividly clear. Those long years were filled with poor draft decisions. There was no money for good free agents. Good players like Johnny Damon and Carlos Beltran came through the system just to be traded away when club control was ending."

They’ve also made some shrewd business decisions and added some depth pieces in the like of Dillon Gee, John Lannan, Travis Snider and more. In the past three days they’ve signed up Clint Barmes, Brian Duensing, and Ross Ohelndorf to further their depth.

They also signed Mike Minor to a Kris Meden-ish contract that could turn into another underrated signing for genius/general manager Dayton Moore. It gives the Royals a potential quality arm in the rotation who also happens to be left-handed.

The players are in Arizona and baseball season is underway. In only two short weeks the first Spring Training games will begin and the Royals will start the long journey of defending the crown. It’s a great time to be a baseball fan in Kansas City.
