KC Chiefs: Alex Smith Considered Above Average Quarterback

KC Chiefs fans have always been debating about the talents of quarterback Alex Smith since he arrived to Kansas City in 2013.

Alex Smith is the hot debate between fans. Is he the guy who can take this team to the Super Bowl and win it all? It’s always a topic of conversation for Chiefs fans.

Bleacher Report, knowing that quarterbacks are always a popular subject, ranked the 50 NFL quarterbacks this season (yes, there were enough to have a list of 50) and Alex Smith fared decently. He came in at number 23 on the list.

The rankings were determined by accuracy, arm strength, decision-making, mechanics, and positional value. Smith did well in almost all of the categories except for accuracy, in which he scored 28 out of 40.

The rest of the categories saw Smith only getting docked a few points. These were the rest of his results:

  • Arm strength: 16/20
  • Decision-Making: 17/20
  • Mechanics: 8/10
  • Positional Value: 10/10
  • Overall: 79/100

Basically, Smith got a C+ on this exam, which isn’t great, but isn’t awful. It’s barely above average, but hey… Chiefs fans know what they have with Alex Smith, and most are content with it. It’s extremely difficult finding an elite quarterback in this day of age, so if your team can find one that limits his mistakes, but is good at leading a team, you have yourself a decent quarterback in the NFL.

Since Smith arrived to Kansas City three years ago, he’s posted a record of 30-16, thrown for 10,064 yards, 61 touchdowns and 20 interceptions. He’s also rushed for 1,183 yards and four touchdowns, which is one of his best qualities as a quarterback.

Sure, Smith doesn’t possess the “deep ball ability”. Sure, he’s not like Tom Brady or Aaron Rodgers where he singlehandedly can win you a game. What Smith does provide is confidence and the ability to take care of the football, and that’s huge in the NFL. He’s the type of quarterback that if you have a good defense, the team can flourish.

The top five guys on this list were the ones you’d expect to see: Ben Roethlisberger at five, Cam Newton at four, Carson Palmer at three, Aaron Rodgers at two, and Tom Brady at one. All five of these quarterbacks led their teams to the playoffs and all but one were first round picks in their draft class (two were selected number one overall, like Smith was).

While Alex Smith isn’t necessarily the guy who’s going to put up a ton of passing yards or touchdowns each week, he limits his mistakes and always puts the team in a position to win. He may not be elite, but he’s good enough to lead the charge.

For those who aren’t fans of Smith, answer this. Who do you want that’s better? Solid quarterbacks don’t fall off trees, and the Kansas City Chiefs have themselves a solid quarterback.
