KC Chiefs News: Free Agency 2016

facebooktwitterreddit

Today’s KC Chiefs News focuses on NFL free agency in 2016. Will the Chiefs make any big additions?

When the NFL Free agency period opens up on March third, there will be plenty of questions for the KC Chiefs to answer. Will they retain several key free agents? Will they look to bring in new players to save money? With free agency just a little less than a month away, it won’t be long before Chiefs’ fans find out.

According to Spotrac.com, several key contributors are free agents for the Chiefs this season including: Eric Berry, Derrick Johnson, Sean Smith and many more. The Chiefs have some serious holes to file if they can’t retain a few of these key players.

There are also a number of names that stand out on the free agent market that may be available to the Chiefs at a discount.

Dwayne Allen, a tight end for the Colts, will only be 26 years old. He his an above average blocker in the running game and has shown that he is a capable pass catcher also. In his career, Harris hs 91 catches for over 1,000 yards and 13 touchdowns.

His biggest flaw is his inability to stay healthy. He’s missed time in each of the past three seasons and is constantly on the injury report. His unhealthy track record may have him available for a cheaper cost than if he was fully healthy. If he can block well, he may help an offensive line that allowed quarterback pressure nearly a third of the time.

Patrick Robinson is another player that the Chiefs may be able to get at a discount. He would likely be cheaper than Sean Smith but will likely be just as effective. He’s not a shut down corner by any means, but has only given up two touchdowns over the past three seasons.

With Marcus Peters needing to work on that aspect of his game, Robinson could fill two roles. He could play mentor to Marcus Peters and fill the hole left by Sean Smith.

"Still, Dorsey should try to add more firepower. The Chiefs could certainly use a right tackle and if Sean Smith leaves, a No. 2 cornerback. Then there is the idea of adding another receiver. Maclin is clearly the top dog, but Albert Wilson and Chris Conley are not second options at this point. Perhaps targeting Jermaine Kearse and Anquan Boldin would be wise. Maybe even Marvin Jones, if the price is right."

The KC Chiefs have some work to do this off-season but they have a good core of players to build around.

Alex Smith, Travis Kelce, Jeremy Maclin, and some guy named Jamaal Charles give the offense a great start. Adding a couple of offensive weapons around these guys could have the Chiefs in excellent position in 2016.

Mitch Morse proved to be an effective center in the league last season and the Chiefs can build around him on the offensive line. If they can retain Jeff Allen and Ben Grubbs comes back healthy, they are in good shape on the interior of the line.

The Chiefs need to lock up Eric Berry on the defense. He’s not only a great player, but his story is enough to help those around him play at a more intense level. Inspirational players can go a long way when it comes to level of play on one side of the ball. Marcus Peters is another great player for the defense and the Chiefs have some young players creating depth also.
