The Kansas City Chiefs hold the 28th overall pick in the 2016 NFL Draft. Could they consider trading up to draft Ole Miss standout Laremy Tunsil?

The past few years have consisted of poor Alex Smith having to run for his life due to the lack of protection from the offensive line. While the line saw some improvements in 2015, life still wasn’t great for Smith while taking snaps.

The KC Chiefs could decide to grab the best available offensive tackle in the 2016 NFL Draft, by trading up and grabbing Ole Miss tackle Laremy Tunsil. Tunsil, according to CBS Sports at least, is considered to be the best tackle in the draft and the second best player available overall.

John Dorsey has yet to trade up in the draft during his tenure as the Chiefs general manager, but this could be something to consider in order to give Smith protection, and allow him to make plays.

Tunsil, who is foregoing his senior season to enter the draft early, started at left tackle for three years while with the Rebels. He only allowed two sacks during those three years, which is pretty freaking good. No, it’s GREAT and just the type of tackle the Chiefs could use.

He’s also always looking for someone to block and thinks on his feet. He’s good at picking up blitzes and does a great job at protecting his quarterback (this all according to CBS Sports’ Dane Brugler).

Eric Fisher, the Chiefs’ first overall pick in 2013’s draft, played at left tackle all throughout 2015. He’s jumped back and forth between left tackle and right tackle throughout his time in Kansas City.

With Jah Reid doing an “okay” job at right tackle last year, it’s doubtful the team will look to relocate Fisher once again.

In other words, the Kansas City Chiefs will not likely be the team calling Laremy Tunsil’s name on draft day.

Being one of the top two prospects in this year’s draft will likely see Tunsil going within the top five picks. Is it worth Kansas City giving up a bunch to trade up when they look to have their offensive line possibly on the right track?

The biggest knock against Tunsil is that he has allegedly been involved in multiple NCAA violations, according to Chase Goodbread at NFL.com.

"The Tunsil-related violations stem largely from allegations made by his stepfather, Lindsey Miller, that Tunsil had improper contact with sports agents and accepted improper benefits during his recruitment. Another of the Tunsil-related violations involves a Rebels assistant coach improperly allowing Tunsil to spend a night at his home."

These allegations could be nothing, but they could also end up affecting Tunsil’s draft stock, to which maybe he’d fall to the Chiefs at pick 28.

If not, the Chiefs really don’t have any immediate needs they have to fill in this draft, which is why trading up to get Tunsil wouldn’t make a whole lot of sense for them anyway. They could get someone not as talented, but still good, in guys like Taylor Decker or Jack Conklin.
