Kansas City Chiefs Need To Keep Their Defense Intact

facebooktwitterreddit

Super Bowl 50 has come and gone, and the Denver Broncos came out on top. They did so with a stellar defense, something that the Kansas City Chiefs had as well.

The key to a Super Bowl championship for the KC Chiefs is simple: Keep the defense from the past few seasons intact.

Many might be pushing for John Dorsey to add weapons on offense, but that’s not necessary for this Chiefs team. We’ve seen that mediocre offenses can get you a Super Bowl title, but only if the defense is tremendous.

Look at the Denver Broncos from this season as an example. Peyton Manning was not his normal self and the offense suffered as a result. Manning didn’t need to play great football though, he didn’t even need to play GOOD football, because the Broncos’ defense was one for the ages.

  • With guys like Von Miller, Malik Jackson, DeMarcus Ware, Aqib Talib, Chris Harris Jr., and T.J. Ward, the Broncos defense was stacked this season. So stacked that it got them through a 2015 season where their offense struggled and the team barely won the AFC West as a result.

The defense took over in the playoffs, demolishing Ben Roethlisberger and Tom Brady en route to the Super Bowl. Once they were on the big stage, it was all about that Denver D, who made Cam Newton‘s life a living hell for four hours.

That’s the key here for the Kansas City Chiefs if they want to win a Super Bowl anytime soon. The Chiefs need to retain their strongest defensive players, and they need to do so at all stops. This means re-signing Husain Abdullah, Eric Berry, Jaye Howard, Derrick Johnson, and Sean Smith.

Windows are very short in sports. Teams typically have about three or four years to try and win a championship.

If these guys can all stay in Kansas City for next year, all the offense has to do is play mediocre football. Alex Smith has shown that he’s capable of that. He has Jeremy Maclin to help him make plays, Jamaal Charles will be back in 2016, and Travis Kelce is one of the up and coming stars in the league. The Chiefs have the potential to put up points on offense, but their defense is the key to winning them a title.

It certainly won’t be easy keeping all of these guys in Kansas City, but it is possible. Alex Smith and Justin Houston taking pay cuts would help, but even if that doesn’t happen, one of these guys can be franchise tagged. My guess would be either Berry or Sean Smith.

The Chiefs have the potential to put up points on offense, but their defense is the key to winning them a title.

Smith seems like the more logical choice to have the tag placed on him though, as he will likely draw the most interest and is the most crucial piece to the Chiefs secondary. Bring Smith back, and whatever receiver he’s covering will be on Sean Smith Island.

Berry is loved in Kansas City, which is why it wouldn’t be shocking for him to take a hometown discount and rejoin the team on his own. He’s pivotal to the success in the secondary also.

Johnson is along the same lines as Berry, except for his age. He’s 33 and will turn 34 during the 2016 season. He has stated that he’d like to be a Chief next season though, at least according to Terez Paylor of The Kansas City Star.

Jaye Howard has been talking to the Chiefs, and would be a huge signing if the Chiefs could manage to do it. He helped Allen Bailey and Dontari Poe along the front of the defensive line, and it’d be great if the team could keep him in that role for 2016 and beyond.

Windows are very short in sports. Teams typically have about three or four years to try and win a championship (unless you have an elite quarterback, in which case you’re in contention for 15+ years). If the Kansas City Chiefs want to be hoisting the Lombardi Trophy in 2016, they must keep their defense intact.
