KC Royals: Remaining Free Agent Outfield Options
By Scott Dillon
The KC Royals have a fair amount of outfield depth already. They could head to Spring Training making no additional moves and be just fine.
There are a few other big free agent names out there. Marlon Byrd, Will Venable, and David DeJesus are all still out there. David DeJesus was once the best player on the Royals’ roster. Could they seek out a reunion with him?
Marlon Byrd is getting close to 40 and probably doesn’t play a good enough defense for the Royals to have interest. He is capable of hitting home runs, but doesn’t hit for average and doesn’t get on base. They’d likely look for someone more athletic.

Will Venable is another player who might make sense for the Royals. He has some power and can steal some bases but doesn’t hit for much average. He’s also fairly good in the field with 19 runs saved in right field during his career. He may be a cheap option for the Royals but would likely be a platoon player. He doesn’t hit left handed pitching so it’s unlikely they’d pair him up with Dyson.
The Royals have options during these last few weeks of the off-season. Dayton Moore has proven that he’s not going to overspend on the wrong players. He’s got a plan to keep the Royals in contention. All we can do is sit back and enjoy the ride.
