Round 3 – Pick 91: Sebastian Tretola (Guard, Arkansas)

We haven’t gotten away from the big guys up front and there’s no reason to start shying away from them now.

Jeff Allen really played well in the guard position last season. He got up field to make blocks and his pass protection wasn’t too shabby either. His growth is one of the reasons the Chiefs were able to run the ball up the middle so well this year.

Jah Reid did not play all that well. He is improving, but an upgrade would be huge for the Chiefs. If they could get two above average interior linemen, their run game could get even better.

Sebastian Tretola likely isn’t ready to start in the NFL, but could develop very quickly. He gave up only a half sack in the past two seasons playing in the SEC. The SEC traditionally has strong defenses that can get to the quarterback so that stat is fairly impressive.

CBS Sports lists one of his strengths as being excellent in screen protection. With a team that likes to run a lot of screen passes that seems like a perfect fit. See what they had to say about him in his player overview:

"Tretola is an all-you-can-eat kind of interior lineman who excelled in the Arkansas 1.5-ton offensive scheme. He’s power on power and shared the SEC’s Jacobs Trophy awarded to the top offensive lineman with only 0.5 sacks allowed as a junior and senior where he was the immovable object at left guard. Coaches graded Tretola at over 80 percent in 11 of 13 games as a senior."

Tretola isn’t a flashy pick, but he seems to be another safe option in the third round. He was ranked 86th overall on CBS’ big board so it’s not a reach that he could be available with the 91st overall pick.

If nothing else, Tretola would provide the Chiefs with good depth on the offensive line. He may not be versatile enough to move around, but offensive line depth is important.
