KC Royals news focus on new Royals’ outfielder Travis Snider and some of their top prospects.

The Royals signed Travis Snider to a minor league deal on Saturday with an invitation to Spring Training.

Travis Snider is a former first round draft pick. The 28 year old outfielder has never quite lived up to the hype that surrounds a pick of that caliber.

Though he’s managed to hit a very eye-popping .333 at the Triple ‘A’ level in his career, his numbers haven’t translated to the Major League level. Snider is just 28 years old so there is still a chance that he’s slow to develop and could eventually put up some good numbers for the Royals.

Dayton Moore has hit it big on some reclamation projects in the past, and if Snider can break out it could turn into a huge signing for the Royals.

Snider will join a crowded group of players who are trying to earn the starting right field spot for the Royals. The current list of those players includes Jarrod Dyson, Paulo Orlando, Bubba Starling, Reymond Fuentes, Brett Eibner, Jose Martinez, and now Travis Snider.

KC Royals’ prospects also made headlines as they were named to MLB.com’s list of top 100 prospects.

The Royals don’t boast the strong farm system that they are used to, but a good portion of good prospects were traded for a World Championship. A weak farm system is a small price to pay for the good feelings that come with winning a championship.

"Snider is a former first round pick of the Toronto Blue Jays, whom Baseball Prospectus once ranked the no. 5 prospect in MLB, and Baseball America listed as no. 6 overall (both in 2009). However, Snider has never been able to realize the early promise many scouts projected for him, and has settled into a career as a fourth outfielder."

Everyone is going to want to play for the Royals right now as they are one of the best teams in baseball. Internal competition is never a bad thing and the fact that the Royals have so much depth is a good sign.

Whether some of these prospects or fringe players make the team or not, they could turn into trade chips that help the Royals make it back to the World Series for a third consecutive season. Now is no time to let off the gas. They should be as greedy as possible when grabbing up trophies. As Royals fans know those opportunities come few and far between.
