KC Royals News focuses on topics like Mike Moustakas and arbitration, the projected window of opportunity, and lineup questions.

Mike Moustakas and the Royals are still far apart in their talks to avoid arbitration. Moustakas had a breakout year in 2015 and his agent, Scott Boras, is looking to take full advantage of that for his client.

Moustakas appears to be seeking over seven million dollars for the 2016 season, and the Royals may be wise to look at a two-year contract as they did with Lorenzo Cain. If Moustakas continues his growth, it could well be worth the guaranteed money now as opposed to another arbitration hearing a year from now.

The window of opportunity for the Royals to remain contenders would appear to be at least the next two seasons. As long as their core group of proven winners stick around, no one should overlook the Royals. (Although it seems projection systems don’t like them again this season)

Dayton Moore has done well to build a winner in his time as general manager, and he’ll look to continue that trend. There’s been a lot of focus on what will happen when Royals like Moustakas and Eric Hosmer depart, but what if Dayton Moore decides to leave at some point also.

His contract is up after the 2016 season and at this point the Royals would be wise to extend him. Dayton Moore has already shown what he can do on a fixed income. If he heads to a team with more financial flexibility he might be unstoppable.

The KC Royals have some work to do in putting together a lineup this season as well. The departure of Ben Zobrist leaves a glaring hole in the two hole, and someone will have to bat ninth for the spot left by Alex Rios.

Moustakas started out well for the Royals in the second spot last season and Alex Gordon has experience there as well. Gordon’s ability to draw walks may play well behind Alcides Escobar although he does strike out a fair deal more than you’d like out of that spot.

If Christian Colon earns a starting role at second, he too could be a good second batter. He is a patient hitter who can draw walks, handles the bat well enough to move a runner over, and doesn’t strike out at a high rate.

Royals And Moose Far Apart On Arbitration Numbers [John Viril: Kings of Kauffman]

"The way arbitration works is both sides make a proposal, and a panel of three arbitrators select which deal makes the most sense. While that sounds simple, Kansas City Royals general manager Dayton Moore has avoided this process ever since taking the job 10 years ago. Justifying an arbitration deal forces the team to highlight a player’s shortcomings, which can result in long-term acrimony or cause him to lose confidence in his abilities. An arbitration hearing can only hurt a young player’s development"

With just under a month until pitchers and catchers report, the Royals are starting to take shape. They still have a few balls in the air with lineup questions and trying to avoid arbitration with Mike Moustakas, but appear ready for the most part in getting ready to try their hand at a repeat.
