The KC Chiefs and their fans are still feeling a little empty this morning. But there is plenty to be thankful for.

The 2015 season was one for the books in Kansas City sports. The KC Royals brought home the city’s first major championship in thirty years and the KC Chiefs kept the party going by not losing a game in November or December.

After starting the season 1-5 they rattled off 10 straight wins to give the Broncos a challenge at capturing the AFC West. They saw young team members step up throughout the season and establish themselves as leaders on the team.

We got a glimpse of what could come in the future with Chris Conley and Marcus Peters. Jeremy Maclin made an impact in his first year and showed plenty of guts trying to play in Saturday’s divisional round game vs the Patriots. Travis Kelce continued building a rapport with Alex Smith and gave the fans some good plays down the stretch.

The Chiefs had plenty of success against the AFC West this year going 5-1. The Chiefs gave fans something they hadn’t see in quite a while by going to Denver and embarrassing the Broncos. On a day when Manning set the all-time passing record, the Chiefs relegated him to the bench, picking him off five times. For the Chiefs, it was more than just a game, it meant that maybe the Broncos reign of dominance over the AFC west may be coming to an end.

But at least for now, if you can look past the bad, take comfort in the memories of this season.

The Chiefs rattled off win after win in the same fashion. They constructed well executed and clock consuming drives on offense, and overwhelmed offenses with their stout defense. If the Chiefs had a lead in the fourth quarter, it felt like a guarantee that they’d hold on. That’s a feeling that Chiefs’ fans have long been without.

The Chiefs also did something they haven’t done the last few times they’ve been in the post-season. They won their way into the playoffs rather than needing help or losing in the final week of the season.

They carried momentum into the playoffs for the first time in years and showed it on the opening kickoff against the Texans. (Even Knile Davis does some things well) They set the tone by beating the Texans in dominate fashion and held them scoreless. They sealed up their first playoff win in 22 years and had Chiefs fans talking Super Bowl for the first time in decades.

Even though the team lost to the Patriots, they still gave the fans something to be hope for. “There’s always next year” didn’t enter anyone’s mind until the evening of January 16th. That’s not as satisfying as a Super Bowl win but for Chiefs fans, even moral victories have to count for something.

While it’s hard to look past all of the ugly play on Saturday, I personally want to thank the Chiefs for their performance this season. For most of my life, Kansas City Sports has been an afterthought to their opponents. But this year, if only for a small time, the Chiefs and Royals were the last team anyone wanted to play.

No one knows what the future holds for the Chiefs and they do have several key players entering free agency this off-season. But at least for now, if you can look past the bad, take comfort in the memories of this season.
