KC Chiefs Can Earn Respect By Beating New England

facebooktwitterreddit

The KC Chiefs are advancing in the playoffs for the first time since the 1993 season, but have a daunting task ahead of them this weekend in Foxborough.

While the Kansas City Chiefs blew out the Houston Texans in the first round of the playoffs by a score of 30-0, the team will have to do a whole lot more to earn the respect of the nation. That respect could come this Saturday evening, as the Chiefs will travel to Foxborough for an AFC Divisional match-up against the New England Patriots.

Winning a game in the postseason was big enough for the Chiefs, as it’s something they hadn’t been able to accomplish since 1994. Now that the monkey is off the back of the team, the players, and the coaches, they can set their sights on the ultimate goal for any NFL team – Winning the Super Bowl.

In order to get to that feat, the KC Chiefs will have to knock off the defending champion New England Patriots first, and they’ll have to do so on the road in one of the most difficult stadiums to play in – Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts.

The Chiefs have not fared well in Foxborough since Tom Brady became a starter for the team in 2001, sporting an 0-3 record at chilly Gillette Stadium. In fact, the team has not won a game in Foxborough since 1990 (see tweet below). The worst thumping the team took was a 34-3 loss on Monday Night Football back in the 2011 season (Tyler Palko started that game for the Chiefs; Remember him?).

Something to keep in mind with all three of those losses though, is that those Chiefs teams were nowhere near as talented as this 2015 Chiefs team is.

The Kansas City Chiefs have won 11 straight games behind head coach Andy Reid, quarterback Alex Smith, and a terrific defense that’s averaging 17.9 points allowed per game, according to ESPN. The point being that the Chiefs have a strong chance of winning this game if their defense continues to perform and the offense limits their mistakes.

Leaving Gillette Stadium with a victory is not an easy task for any opposing team, but don’t count the KC Chiefs out of this one. The Patriots didn’t look so scary at the end of the season, losing four of their last six games after a 10-0 start.

Yes, a lot of New England’s struggles down the stretch were due to key injuries, but the team did lose their final two regular season games and could still be feeling down when the Chiefs roll into town.

Also, it’s worth mentioning that the Chiefs did steamroll the Patriots the last time the two met, which was only a season ago. It was a Monday Night Football match-up during the 2014 season that saw the Chiefs run away with the game 41-14, and had many (including Trent Dilfer) calling for the end of the Patriots’ season (yeah, in week four).

Don’t listen to the national media, Chiefs fans. It’s certainly possible that the Chiefs can pull out a win against the Pats on Saturday. New England is just like any other playoff team in the NFL – beatable.

Hopefully the Chiefs can prove just that on Saturday and gain the respect they deserve this season.
