KC Royals News: Eric Hosmer and the New Scary Bullpen

facebooktwitterreddit

Happy New Years Royals fans! KC Royals news today consists of what the team will do with Eric Hosmer in a few years, and how the Royals might not have the scariest bullpen in baseball anymore.

Well, 2015 is over. The Kansas City Royals conquered the 2015 season, which was obvious by their World Series title. The Royals dominated all season long and they did so as a united team.

One of the best and most popular players since his arrival to the big leagues in 2011 is none other than Eric Hosmer. Hosmer was the Royals’ first round pick in 2008 and was thought by some to possibly be the next Bo Jackson in Kansas City (Link courtesy of Yahoo Sports’ Jeff Passan).

When thinking about the past two postseasons, Hosmer probably comes to mind for many. The first baseman had a lot of clutch hits, including the HUGE triple in the AL Wildcard game in 2014, which caused Kauffman Stadium to erupt. This led to Sam Fuld and Jonny Gomes running into each other in the outfield trying to make a play on the ball.

Hosmer also had several big hits in this season’s postseason, but the biggest was when he stole home in the ninth inning and tied the game up at two runs a piece. The run could have been a huge mistake because the Royals were down to their last out, but Hosmer took a bold risk, and it paid off, as the Royals ended up winning the World Series that very same night (early next morning in New York).

Hosmer wasn’t the only one to sustain success for the Kansas City Royals though. The team’s bullpen has been their biggest weapon the past few years, but is there a new “scariest” bullpen in the league?

The New York Yankees recently acquired Aroldis Chapman for the Reds for four minor league players. Chapman will join Dellin Betances and Andrew Miller in the pen, who already made a nasty duo on the mound.

While we’re all biased on which pen is better, it’s not completely outrageous to say that the Yankees could be copying the Royals’ strategy of having a dominant bullpen.

"The new Yankees trio had the top three K/9 percentages in the league (strikeouts per nine) in major league baseball last season, so despite the steep price for Chapman, the Yankees could have just got the key to a deep playoff run."
