Mizzou Football: Blaine Gabbert Getting Fresh Start With 49ers

facebooktwitterreddit

Former Mizzou football alum Blaine Gabbert hasn’t had it great in the NFL. In fact, many could have labeled him as a bust after just two seasons in the pros.

This season, however, the former Missouri Tiger quarterback has seen success.

Blaine Gabbert, playing for the San Francisco 49ers for a second straight year, not only got to see the field this season, but he also got an ample amount of starting time for the Niners.

Now yes, a large part of why Gabbert is out there this year is due to Colin Kaepernick‘s injury that landed him on the injured reserved list. It’s worth mentioning, however, that Kap was benched in favor of Gabbert shortly before that was announced. Gabbert since has led the Niners to a 2-5 record, throwing for 1,677 yards, nine touchdowns and six interceptions.

  • Sure, those aren’t the stats you’ll see from guys like Tom Brady or Cam Newton (who was taken in the same draft as Gabbert… Seems just like yesterday doesn’t it?), but still. It’s nice to see the guy making strides in his quarterbacking game.

The 49ers aren’t a good team, that’s been obvious watching them play this season. With Jim Harbaugh coaching at Michigan now, the Niners have Jim Tomsula running things, and it hasn’t been a pretty season.

My point being that Gabbert has actually been somewhat of a bright spot in a poor season in San Francisco football. This is a team that made it to the Super Bowl in the 2012 season and the NFC Championship game the following season. They were on cruise control when it came to winning.

Last season, the team hit a roadblock, and Harbaugh was gone at the end of the season. Kaepernick struggled this season without the head coach who drafted him, and it was evident that the San Francisco 49ers would hold a top draft pick in 2016.

    Back to Blaine though.

Gabbert’s highlight this season came in the game against the Chicago Bears at Soldier Field. The 49ers trailed by a touchdown with less than two minutes to go in the fourth quarter. Gabbert took the ball himself and ran 44 yards for the game tying touchdown.

Gabbert led the Niners to victory in overtime, hitting Torrey Smith with a 71-yard touchdown pass to give San Francisco a much needed win. This game had to be a huge confidence booster for the former Mizzou standout, who didn’t do much during his days as a Jacksonville Jaguar.

    More from KC Kingdom

The Jaguars, who actually traded up to draft Gabbert with the tenth overall pick in 2011, had seen enough of Gabbert after just three short seasons in sunny Florida. They traded him to San Francisco during the 2014 off season, earning a sixth-round draft pick in the process.

Gabbert started in 27 games during his Jacksonville days, throwing for 4,357 yards, 22 touchdowns, and 24 interceptions. He posted a record of 5-22 over the span of three years. Not exactly the type of production you’re looking for out of a guy you traded up to get.

While Blaine Gabbert could have easily been written off after being traded, he’s turned a few heads as a starter in San Francisco. It’s likely that Kaepernick will be out of San Francisco after the disappointing year he had in 2015, so could Gabbert be the Niners’ guy next year?
