KC Chiefs: Alex Smith Could Be MVP Of The Team

The KC Chiefs won their ninth straight game on Sunday, and leading the way was quarterback Alex Smith.

Alex Smith isn’t the most popular athlete in Kansas City. In fact, for most of his time as a member of the Kansas City Chiefs, Smith has probably been one of the least popular sports guys in town. That’s what comes with being a quarterback in a football heavy town.

This season has been a different ball game for Smith though. Sure, he’s still not thinking “I’m going to heave the ball down field on every play”, but he looks more comfortable this year and it’s shown on the field.

After 15 games so far this season, Alex Smith has thrown for 3,330 yards, 18 touchdowns, and only five interceptions. He’s also been a huge threat with his legs, rushing for 437 yards on the ground and two touchdowns as well.

It would have been easy for Andy Reid and the rest of the KC Chiefs coaching staff to have given up on Alex Smith after the team fell in a 1-5 hole, but they stuck with him, and it has paid off tremendously. Smith has been playing very smart football since the win streak began in late October.

Since the Kansas City Chiefs acquired Alex Smith from San Francisco in 2013, he’s gone 29-16 as a starter (he missed a game apiece in 2013 and 2014). Obviously the two best quarterbacks in Chiefs history are Len Dawson and Trent Green, but Smith is making his case as the third best after leading Kansas City to three straight consecutive winning seasons.

Alex Smith could be the MVP for the Chiefs this season for a number of reasons. First, look at his stats.

He’s thrown for over 3,000 yards in each of his three seasons as a Chief and the most interceptions he’s thrown while in Kansas City was seven, back in 2013. The guy has only thrown five picks all year this year, and don’t forget about that crazy streak he had just a few weeks ago.

Second, Alex Smith has improved a lot this season.

A lot of that is in thanks to Jeremy Maclin suiting up for the Chiefs this year, but you can just tell that Smith looks a lot more comfortable in the system now after three years with the same staff.

Remember – Smith had a different offensive coordinator almost every season during his days with the 49ers, which definitely led to his struggles there in the early years.

Smith also has just shown a lot of toughness this year. When a Chargers player had a dirty hit on him a few weeks back, Smith got in his face and started yelling at him. It was just cool to see him so fired up, as he seems kind of like a quiet and laid back guy.

He had a funny moment this past Sunday, when he found out Pittsburgh lost and pumped his fist on the sidelines. It’s moments like that that make fans appreciate Smith, and see that he really enjoys playing for their team and wants to lead this team to greatness.

People might have different opinions on the Kansas City Chiefs’ quarterback, but you can’t deny that he’s been the best quarterback this team has had in close to ten years.
