KC Royals News: Alex Gordon And Outfield Concerns

facebooktwitterreddit

KC Royals news focuses on who else but Alex Gordon and on the problems the Royals could have in the outfield next season.

The Kansas City Royals are at a crossroads this off-season with the possibility of long-time fan favorite Alex Gordon departing for greener pastures. While the Royals have never been the type of team to break the bank with anyone, Gordon seems like he could be the exception to this rule.

If the Royals do lose out on the Gordon sweepstakes, Dayton Moore has made a comment that Jarrod Dyson could be a full-time starter next season. Don’t get me wrong, I like Dyson, but he’s not an every day starter. The Royals will need to find a free agent to take one of the corner outfield spots, as Alex Rios is also gone next season.

With Jason Heyward getting an eight-year deal worth $184 million from the Chicago Cubs, the top outfield free agent has found a home, and Alex Gordon should be making his decision any day now.

It’ll be weird to see Gordon with another team next season, but I trust Dayton Moore’s decision, whatever it will be.

Royals Rumors: Will Alex Gordon Stay Or Go [KC Kingdom]

"Gordon, at 31 years of age, is a career .269 hitter who has hit more than 20 home runs in a season just once in his career. Yes, he’s a Gold Glove outfielder and has historically been a solid on-base % guy.Looking at this, I don’t exactly blame the Royals for not getting into a bidding war for his services. At the rate it’s going, someone is going to overpay grossly for Gordon."

KC Royals: Candidates to Replace Alex Gordon [Kings of Kauffman]

"With both Alex Gordon and Alex Rios free-agents, the Kansas City Royals have a clear need at corner outfielder. However, they are clearly struggling with the price. Dayton Moore has even suggested that he’d be okay with filling his outfield holes with internal options, even as he admitted he was still looking for outfield help."

Kansas City Royals Jarrod Dyson Is Not Enough [Kings of Kauffman]

"Dyson does bring qualities to the lineup that the Royals value. He makes contact, has excellent speed and puts pressure on opposing defenses. But he is not going to replace Gordon, Ben Zobrist or even Rios in the lineup. Dyson, even though his numbers may be serviceable, is not the type of bat that the Royals need to replace in their lineup."

Here are some other articles on Gordon and the Royals outfield.

On Alex Gordon, financial restraint, and a pretty good long-term outlook for the Royals [Kansas City Star]

"To that end, Gordon presents something of a litmus test. He is undoubtedly worth the largest contract in franchise history (five years and $55 million), but it will take more than that to keep him in Kansas City. He turns 32 in February, and some scouts worry about how his body will hold up. He dealt with two different injuries last year — a wrist in the spring, and a groin in the summer — and has shown diminishing speed and quickness."

Royals have options to replace Gordon [Today’s Knuckleball]

"It stands to reason the Royals could see Parra as younger, cheaper version of Gordon. Denard Span is also a possibility. Span is 31 and coming off his two best seasons with the Nationals, but offers very little power for an outfielder."

More from KC Kingdom

"If the Royals move on from Alex Gordon, what is Plan B? The remaining free agent outfielders are an underwhelming assortment that includes Gerardo Parra, Austin Jackson, and Travis Snider. There have been recent rumors of the Royals talking trade with some exciting options like Jackie Bradley Jr., Carlos Gonzalez, or Todd Frazier. But those options would require the Royals depleting an already thin farm system."

While it would be difficult for the KC Royals to move on from Alex Gordon, we have to think about the team’s future. Guys like Lorenzo Cain, Alcides Escobar, Eric Hosmer, and Mike Moustakas will be hitting free agency after the 2017 season. If the Royals shell out a big contract to Gordon, it might be harder to get some of those guys re-signed.
