Kansas City Chiefs: A Long Time Coming

facebooktwitterreddit

The last time the Kansas City Chiefs defeated Denver quarterback Peyton Manning was on Halloween in 2004. The Chiefs had gone 14-1 against Manning during his 19 year career and hadn’t beat him since he came to the AFC West in 2012. That all changed on Sunday though.

That’s right.

The Kansas City Chiefs finally beat Peyton Manning and the Denver Broncos, and they did so in demanding fashion, winning 29-13 on Sunday on the Broncos home turf.

There’s a lot to say about this win. Sure, it only puts the Chiefs at 4-5 on the season, and keeps them in a second place tie with Oakland in the division, but it’s nice to know that it is humanly possible of Kansas City to beat Manning.

The Chiefs also hadn’t beaten Denver in awhile, so that makes it even sweeter. The last time the Chiefs beat the Broncos was in January of 2012 when Tim Tebow was still taking snaps in a Broncos uniform. So yeah, it had been a hot minute since the Kansas City Chiefs beat the Broncos.

The Chiefs played one of their best games all season on Sunday. They didn’t turn the ball over once, which is what killed them in the first match-up against Denver (they had five turnovers in that game). This time, the defense was able to pick off Peyton Manning a whopping four times and also pick off Brock Osweiler once.

Oh yeah, Osweiler had to come into the game because Manning was struggling so bad. It wasn’t exactly the way I wanted to see Manning go out because like him or not, the guy is a legend in the NFL. He’s hands down one of the best quarterbacks the game has ever seen, so seeing him perform as poorly as he did on Sunday wasn’t fun.

On the other hand though, the Chiefs finally beat him and they did so mightily. I haven’t been super supportive of this team this season, especially after the disappointing losses to Denver in week two and the Bears in week five, but maybe it’s not too late for the Chiefs to get something going.

At the end of the game, it was obvious that the players were fired up, and they certainly have a favorable schedule to end the season. They won’t win the division, but a shot at making the playoffs as a Wildcard is not out of the question at all.

Up next are the struggling Chargers next week in San Diego. This was originally scheduled as a Sunday night game, but was moved due to the better match-up of the Cardinals and Bengals.
