KC Chiefs Can Get Back On Track Against Denver

facebooktwitterreddit

After a disappointing 3-5 start to the season, the KC Chiefs have a chance to turn their season around on Sunday against the Denver Broncos.

The Kansas City Chiefs had the ability to be a competitive team this year. With John Dorsey going out and acquiring guys like Jeremy Maclin (to help the receiving game) and Ben Grubbs (to help the atrocious offensive line), it didn’t seem too crazy of a though that these Chiefs could win the AFC West and host a playoff game for the first time since the 2010 season.

Alas, the Chiefs faltered in week two against none other than the Denver Broncos. Kansas City led that game the entire time, but still managed to lose in the final minute. Turnovers killed the Chiefs in that game, but they have a chance to redeem themselves this Sunday… against the same opponent too.

If the KC Chiefs can go into Denver and come away with a victory, it’s possible that the momentum could shift back in their favor and they could make a late playoff run. They’re not winning the division, as the Broncos are 7-1 with the Raiders being the next closest threat at 4-4.

The Chiefs could, however, make it to the playoffs with nine wins though. That means they have to win six out of their final eight games. Manageable for most teams, but the Chiefs haven’t performed well under pressure this season.

As I mentioned above, the Chiefs bombed on Thursday Night Football against the Broncos. They had five turnovers, including a crucial Jamaal Charles fumble that sealed the game. The next week, on Monday Night Football, the Chiefs followed up by getting crushed by the Green Bay Packers.

Week four saw Kansas City getting dismantled by the Cincinnati Bengals. This game was mostly embarrassing due to the fact that the Chiefs didn’t get a single touchdown. Cairo Santos kicked seven field goals instead.

Week five should have been a Chiefs victory, but the defense faltered in the last few minutes to let Jay Cutler and the Bears grind out a win. Had the Chiefs not lost the Denver game and Chicago game, they’d be 5-3 right now and easily would be in the running to make the playoffs.

Now, the Chiefs have to face Denver once more, the Raiders twice, the Chargers twice, Baltimore, Buffalo, and Cleveland to finish the season. The Broncos always pose a problem for Kansas City and have since Peyton Manning arrived to Denver in 2012. In fact, the Chiefs have not defeated the Broncos since the 2011 season when Tim Tebow was taking snaps in Denver. Heh.

With Manning not playing like himself this season, the Chiefs need to capitalize and get a win in the Mile High City this Sunday. Their season pretty much depends on it and it could really motivate this team and be that momentum they need to carry themselves through the rest of the season.
