Royals Rumors: Could Alex Gordon Re-Sign With Royals

facebooktwitterreddit

The biggest and most prominent of the Royals rumors floating around are revolving around left fielder Alex Gordon. Will he stay or will he go?

Alex Gordon was the Kansas City Royals‘ second overall pick in 2005 out of the University of Nebraska. He was with this organization during the bad times, but has gotten to experience playing in the World Series the past two seasons.

Gordon declined his option with the Royals on Tuesday, but that doesn’t mean he’s gone from Kansas City next season. In fact, Tim Dierkes of MLB Trade Rumors thinks that Gordon will stay in Kansas City.

Dierkes predicts that Gordon will sign with the Royals on a five-year $105 million deal. Here’s what Dierkes had to say on the matter,

More from Kansas City Royals

"Gordon was drafted second overall by the Royals in 2005, one pick after Upton. He has become one of the game’s best left fielders, combining elite defense with excellent on-base skills and decent pop. Gordon’s left-handed bat would look great in a lot of lineups, but most MLBTR writers expect him to remain in Kansas City. How far will the World Champion Royals push the hometown discount? We feel Gordon’s earning power is around $100MM, so it’s hard to picture him accepting something below $75MM."

As much as Dayton Moore loves Alex Gordon and what’s he done for the Kansas City Royals organization, I don’t see him shelling out this big of a contract to Gordon, or to anybody for that matter. That just isn’t how the Royals roll.

Guys like Lorenzo Cain, Eric Hosmer, Mike Moustakas, and Salvador Perez are all likely due to get raises this year and giving a giant deal to Gordon will only make that more difficult. Plus, Gordon is going to be 32 in February.

Obviously it’s sad to think about Gordon being in another team’s uniform, but the MLB is a business. Gordon should take advantage of an opportunity if he can get a mega-deal with another team.

There is a chance that the former Nebraska star could take a hometown discount, but the Royals will have to make a strong effort to keep Gordo in a Royals uniform in the future. They’ve already made a $15.8 million qualifying offer to Gordon on Friday.

Other interesting predictions in Dierkes’ article are Ben Zobrist signing with the New York Yankees, and the Kansas City Royals signing Mike Pelfrey.
