Mizzou Football: Blaine Gabbert To Start For 49ers

Former Mizzou quarterback Blaine Gabbert will be starting for the San Francisco 49ers this coming Sunday.

The 49ers have struggled to get anything done this season and very well could be competing for the first overall pick near the end of the season. Colin Kaepernick at one point looked to be the clear quarterback of the future just a few short seasons ago, but now it appears that Jim Tomsula is ready to give Gabbert a try under center.

Kaepernick has only thrown six touchdowns and five interceptions in eight games this season. He’s been incredibly underwhelming as a starter and it’s hard to believe that this guy led the 49ers to a Super Bowl just a few seasons ago and to an NFC title game one year later.

Still though. The guy has not been performing like a former second round pick should be. While Gabbert hasn’t been great in the NFL, it could be something that could spark the Niners offense, and maybe jumpstart his career.

Blaine Gabbert hasn’t had a stellar career in the NFL. He played for the University of Missouri for three seasons and threw for a total of 6,822 yards with 40 touchdowns and only 11 interceptions. He also rushed for eight touchdowns.

Gabbert opted to forego his senior season at Mizzou and enter the 2011 NFL Draft where he was drafted tenth overall in the 2011 NFL Draft by he Jacksonville Jaguars. Jacksonville actually traded up to get him too, which is weird to think about considering how poorly he played during his time there, but hey… They didn’t know that would happen obviously.

His rookie season saw him starting 14 games and only winning four games. He threw for over 2,200 yards, but threw 12 touchdowns and 11 interceptions. His second season saw him throwing for less yards (1,662), less touchdowns (nine), but less interceptions (six) in ten starts and 11 games total. Gabbert went 1-9 as a starter that season.

His final season as a Jaguar was not pretty. He went 0-3 and only passed for a solo touchdown and threw seven picks. It was the end of the Blaine Gabbert era in Jacksonville, as the Jaguars owned the third overall pick in the 2014 draft. Jacksonville selected Blake Bortles that year to be their new potential franchise quarterback.

Gabbert ended his three seasons in Jacksonville with a 5-22 record, which is awful. He then went on to sign with the San Francisco 49ers and was named the backup to Kaepernick. Now he’ll get the chance to show if he still has what it takes to be a starter when the 49ers host the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday.

Gabbert is only 26 years old and already looks like a bust in the league, but who knows? Maybe this is just the opportunity that Gabbert needs to prove himself in the National Football League.
