The biggest surprise is that Terrance Gore has been left off for Raul Mondesi. It’s shocking because I’d think if the Royals wanted to replace Gore with anyone it’d be with Jonny Gomes for his postseason experience and his bat.

Mondesi is only 20 and has yet to appear for the Royals in the regular season. As Max Rieper of Royals Review pointed out, Mondesi could be the first player to make his major league debut in the World Series. That’d be pretty cool, but hopefully if the Royals are using him, it’s only for his speed.

The rest of the roster isn’t surprising. What will be interesting to see is how Yost and company handle the rule changes once they get to New York. The National League doesn’t use a designated hitter, so I’ll be curious to see if the Royals put Kendrys Morales at first and maybe stick Eric Hosmer in the outfield (or vice versa).

It might seem silly, but Alex Rios isn’t the best defensively anyway, and the Royals could really use Morales’ bat during those three road games. The American League team is always at a disadvantage when playing in National League parks because they don’t abide by those rules during the regular season. The Mets already have the experience of planning who to pinch hit and when to do it.

Hopefully the move of leaving Gore off and putting a 20-year old on the World Series roster won’t come back to bite the Royals in the butt. It appears that Mondesi is fast too though, as displayed in Joey Nowak of MLB.com’s most recent article so perhaps Yost felt that Mondesi was a better bet at the plate.

Gore was never anything at the plate and was used simply for his blazing fast speed. He was picked off once in the postseason thus far and that was due to a BS call by the replay officials.

Let’s hope the Kansas City Royals can take advantage of their two home games to kick off the series and head to New York with a two game lead.
