KC Chiefs: Time To Draft And Develop A Quarterback

facebooktwitterreddit

The KC Chiefs are 1-5 on the season, and hope is mostly lost for 2015.

Once the Kansas City Chiefs fell in embarrassing fashion to the Denver Broncos, nothing has been clicking with this team, and I mean NOTHING.

The offensive unit is a wreck. Alex Smith can’t do anything, the offensive line sucks, and with Jamaal Charles out for the year, things look even bleaker. It has not been a fun season to say the least.

If the Chiefs continue to play as poorly as they have been, then it’s safe to say the team will land a top five pick in the 2016 NFL Draft. I know it’s WAAAAAY too soon to be talking about the draft, but is it really? The Chiefs suck and the only thing that makes that less painful is talking about the future of the team and how they might not suck next year.

Assuming things continue to go the way they have been, the KC Chiefs need to draft a quarterback in the first round. Yes, Smith still has four more years left on his deal, but I’d say it’s highly unlikely that he remains in Kansas City for four more years.

Draft the best quarterback on the board whether it be Jared Goff, Connor Cook, Christian Hackenberg, whoever it may be, and let them sit behind Smith for a year in 2016. Most people are going to want to throw these guys to the wolves, which most organizations tend to do, but with Smith set to make $17 million a year, he’s probably not going anywhere in the next few years.

Also, unless the offensive line improves next season, no use in sending a rookie quarterback out each week to get pummeled. We don’t need a David Carr situation in Kansas City.

Grooming a quarterback for a year and then sending him to battle might be the best idea for the Kansas City Chiefs next season. Smith isn’t winning anyone over with his dump the ball off routine, and fans are ready for Chase Daniel to be thrown into a game.

It’s gotten to the point this season where we’re left wondering, “Why not give Chase Daniel or Aaron Murray a shot?” Both guys can sling the ball, and maybe that’s all the offense is missing. Smith can’t throw the ball deep and it might benefit the team to put a new guy in under center.

If the Chiefs are able to nab one of the top quarterback prospects in the draft next year, they need to do it. This team hasn’t drafted a first round quarterback since Todd Blackledge in 1983. I’d say it’s time to buck that trend.
