Kansas City Chiefs: An Open Letter To The Franchise

facebooktwitterreddit

The Kansas City Chiefs are a dumpster fire so far this season, and it’s time to say enough is enough.

Dear Kansas City Chiefs organization,

I have been a diehard fan of the Chiefs since I was a kid. I remember being excited every Sunday to watch games with my family and cheer on my favorite team. When the Chiefs would lose, I’d be upset because they were my favorite team and I was a kid. I thought it was unfair to watch my team lose each and every week, sometimes in embarrassing ways.

I was too young to realize that the Chiefs are just one of those teams never destined for greatness. Sadly, at the age of 24, I’m realizing that. This team is going nowhere in 2015 or likely beyond this year, and it’s gotten to a point where I’m beginning to question my fandom.

Look, I’ve put up with a lot during my time following the Kansas City Chiefs. I’ve seen mediocre season after mediocre season, bad quarterback after bad quarterback, blowout loss after blowout loss. I’ve had my share of pains with this team, and didn’t think that 2015 was going to be like the Chiefs I watched throughout high school and early college.

I don’t expect anything from the Chiefs. I don’t expect wins. I don’t expect big plays. I don’t expect greatness. I expect what we’ve become accustomed to, and that’s mediocrity at best.

No, in those years the Chiefs were awful. In fact, they were so bad that I decided to pick a team from the National League to root for as well. I eventually settled on the New Orleans Saints, as they were rebounding from Hurricane Katrina and had Sean Payton and Drew Brees in town for their first year in the Big Easy. It was a nice story, and I felt like it’d potentially give me something to root for in the coming years.

Life as a Saints fan was great (at least then). They did what the Chiefs haven’t been able to do since I’ve followed them, and that’s win on a consistent basis. They won in the regular season. They won in the playoffs. They won a freaking Super Bowl my freshman year of college.

It was nice to be on a winning team for once, and I’ve realized that won’t be possible while being a fan of the Kansas City Chiefs. The Chiefs so far this season are an embarrassment of a team. They can’t do anything on offense, and their defense sucks. It’s embarrassing. I’m embarrassed to be a fan of this franchise.

Not only do I root for this dumpster fire of a team, but I’m also still a fan of the Saints. It’s hard to be as angry with the Saints though because they’ve won a Super Bowl. They’ve done something. They’ve proved they’re not losers. The Chiefs haven’t proved any of that to me.

I’ve watched this team choke in the playoffs so many times it’s not even funny. I mean that Wildcard game a few years ago? Are you kidding me? Is there some type of curse on this team that we’re not aware of? Why are people still fans of the Chiefs?

People will comment and yell at me, and frankly, I don’t care. I’m frustrated. I thought for sure that this was the year for the Chiefs to go the distance and make their mark in the National Football League, but no. Instead the Chiefs have played like absolute crap and the people of Kansas City deserve better than this.

I had all of the excitement and hope in the world for this team before the season started, but after that Denver game, I lost hope in the Kansas City Chiefs. I’m done believing in this team. Same crap every year, and I can invest my time into other things – things that will bring positive results and not make me want to put my head through a wall every week.

My advice for the Chiefs? It’s time to move on from John Dorsey, Andy Reid, and dare I say it, Alex Smith. This team isn’t going to go anywhere with Dorsey and Reid, and I’m finally on board with benching Smith and acquiring a new quarterback. I’m really just done all together with this team.

Of course I’ll still blindly follow because I love this city, but from now on, I don’t expect anything from the Chiefs. I don’t expect wins. I don’t expect big plays. I don’t expect greatness. I expect what we’ve become accustomed to, and that’s mediocrity at best.

Sorry if I ruined anyone’s day, but to quote Mean Girls, “I just have a lot of feelings.”

Sincerely,

Leigh Oleszczak
