KC Royals: Re-Signing Ben Zobrist Is A Must

facebooktwitterreddit

The KC Royals are in the midst of an ALDS battle with the Houston Astros. The series is currently tied 1-1.

Look, I get it. I know no one wants to think about off season moves because the Kansas City Royals will have a lot of difficult decisions to make. One move that needs to be made, however, is keeping Ben Zobrist in a Royals uniform in 2016.

Since joining the Royals in July, Zobrist has been nails for this team. People griped that bringing in all of these new guys was wrecking the Royals’ chemistry, but Zobrist has been one of the better players on the roster in the second half of the season.

He finished the regular season with a .284 batting average, 66 hits, 37 runs, 23 RBI, 16 doubles, one triple, and seven home runs.

He gels with this team, and that’s huge. Who knows if the Royals will be able to find another guy like that either in their farm system or on the free agency market?

Zobrist has also been clutch so far in the postseason. He was one of the few Royals players to make any sort of impact in Game 1, as he had two base hits and a stolen base. In Game 2, he also recorded two hits and also had an RBI.

Simply put, trading for Ben Zobrist was worth it.

What needs to happen now is to lock Zobrist up to a contract that keeps him in Kansas City for the next several years. It’s going to be a complicated process though, as the Royals also need to attempt to re sign long time Royal Alex Gordon.

Now I’m not going to get into a debate over which guy is more important for the Royals to re sign right now, but I feel like keeping Zobrist in Kansas City is a must. He gels with this team, and that’s huge. Who knows if the Royals will be able to find another guy like that either in their farm system or on the free agency market?

I know keeping Zobrist won’t be an easy task. He’s had an impressive end to the regular season and has looked good in the playoffs so far. Teams are going to want him for his hitting abilities and the fact that he can literally play almost any position.

Zobrist has stated in the past that he likes it in Kansas City, and wouldn’t mind staying here. That doesn’t mean a whole lot though when you think about it. All players say they like where they play. You don’t hear many players say, “I hate it here.” It’s just not nice.

So yes, while Zobrist has said he’d love to remain in Kansas City and remain a member of the KC Royals, keeping him here will be tough, but hopefully Dayton Moore can get a deal done that both sides are happy with.
