KC Royals: Different Vibe From Last Year

facebooktwitterreddit

The KC Royals clinched the division last week, but there’s still a different vibe brewing this year.

Last year was a completely different story for our beloved boys in blue. The Kansas City Royals didn’t win the American League Central last year. They had to battle hard throughout the final months of the 2014 season just to make it into the playoffs as a Wild Card team.

When that moment happened and the Royals clinched, it was like a huge weight had been lifted off of Royals fans’ shoulders. It was magical.

This year is different though.

This year in September, fans knew the Royals would make it to the postseason, and it was kind of like, “Yawn. Bring on October.”

The Royals have dominated throughout most of the year. They jump-started the season going 7-0 and got in bench-clearing fights with almost every team in the league (okay, exaggeration, but you get my gist). The Royals battled injuries and obstacles all season long, but always overcame them and came back stronger.

With all of that said though, it hasn’t been as exciting this season, at least not lately. Once the Royals went ahead of the Minnesota Twins by 14 games in the AL Central, the excitement level wasn’t really there. This year in September, fans knew the Royals would make it to the postseason, and it was kind of like, “Yawn. Bring on October.”

This is the exact attitude that KC Royals fans should NOT have.

There are still games left to be played in the regular season. The Royals still need to fight hard and secure home field advantage.

Even though we know our boys in blue are postseason bound for the second consecutive season, that does not guarantee them another World Series appearance. The starters need to perform well every day and compete like they still have something to play for.

While I’m obviously stoked about the Royals clinching the division, I almost wish they hadn’t yet. It would have lit that fire underneath them to keep on pushing and fighting each and every day.

Last year when the Royals still had a shot at the Central title, they were pushing in every game. This year, after clinching, almost all of the starters sat out and basically gave Toronto a game to get closer to home field advantage. That kind of irritated me. I get that the starters deserve a day off, but you still have home field advantage to win. Get out there and keep fighting!

I just have a weird feeling heading into the final stretch this season. I’m not super confident in the Royals getting far in the postseason because they haven’t shown much fight in the last few weeks.

Still though. Hard to complain about a division title and a second consecutive playoff appearance.
