Conclusion
It’s somewhat of an odd year for the Royals defense. They lead all of baseball handily in UZR and DEF, are second in DRS, and yet no one player is a lock to win the Gold Glove. This is truly a case where the Royals defensive prowess is a sum of its parts – almost everyone is well above average, but no one is the clear-cut “best” at their respective position.
However, it’s important to keep in mind that only a quarter of votes will be determined by defensive statistics, which works in the Royals favor.
Managers and coaches haven’t forgotten that three Royals have one each of the past two years, and being thought of an elite, if not the elite, defensive team in baseball, should also help matters.
Will these awards mimic the Royals All-Star representation? No – but one or two guys should still get the nod and provide some Royal consistency on the American League Gold Glove squad.
