KC Chiefs: Andy Reid Must Be More Aggressive

facebooktwitterreddit

The Kansas City Chiefs were outscored 24-7 in the first half of Monday night’s game.

Usually, I am not one to complain about coaching, but this is one of those times when I feel like I should criticize a bit.

The bottom line is KC Chiefs coach  Andy Reid needs to take the training wheels off of the offense.

As we all know, the Chiefs were beat by the Green Bay Packers 38-28 on Monday night. Green Bay came into the game as clear favorites. They have plenty of talent despite being a little injury depleted at wide receiver.

After all the criticism I placed on the Chiefs play calling/offense, I will point out that they put 28 points on the board. That would win you games most of the time.

During the game on Monday, it felt like the Chiefs were being almost too conservative. Even though Alex Smith was under constant pressure, Kansas City should have been more aggressive. When Jeremy Maclin doesn’t see a target until the third quarter, there is a problem. He is the unquestioned top receiver, but at times it feels more like he is just another Dwayne Bowe.

The Chiefs did have a terrific second half though, and Alex Smith threw a touchdown pass to Maclin. Be happy about that, it means we don’t have to hear about it every week when the Chiefs play!

Running back Jamaal Charles went on to score two touchdowns in the second half after he scored one in the first.

For a moment, it looked as though we could’ve seen a comeback, but Green Bay’s offense proved to be too tough. Aaron Rodgers was hitting his wide receivers in stride and scoring touchdowns.

After all the criticism I placed on the Chiefs play calling/offense, I will point out that they put 28 points on the board. That would win you games most of the time. I sincerely believe that Kansas City would have won the game if two things would’ve not happened.

The first: Phillip Gaines sustaining a left knee sprain.

If he doesn’t go down, the defense is stronger. Kansas City’s front seven was working extremely hard, and the play in the secondary was out of their control. The addition of cornerback Sean Smith next week will be massive, and let’s pray that Gaines is not seriously injured.

The second: Tamba Hali‘s forced fumble is not negated by a penalty.

That single play was the lucky break the KC Chiefs had to have. As stated before, the linebackers and defensive linemen were doing their jobs, but the secondary was getting beat. If Kansas City was able to keep that fumble, the offense could have scored and tied the game.

Next week in Cincinnati will be tough. They have AJ Green, one of the top wide receivers in the league. Be happy Sean Smith will be there to guard him.

I am looking for the offense to take more shots downfield and get Maclin going early. He can’t be forgotten about, even if we do nothing more than throw short passes to him. Those short passes could lead to a long throw downfield that could burn the Bengals’ defense.

Don’t forget, it is early in the season, and there is time for the Chiefs to bounce back. Let’s just hope it happens sooner rather than later.
