Kansas State football pulled out a nail biter on Saturday afternoon against the Louisiana Tech Bulldogs. Now, they have an entire week to prepare for their first Big 12 opponent of the season.
The first three games of the season have come and gone, and resulted in a 3-0 record for the Kansas State Wildcats. After a close call game against Louisiana Tech last weekend in Manhattan, the Wildcats now have a week off in preparation for the Big 12 conference portion of their schedule.
Watching K-State’s first three games answered some questions for fans, but certainly not all of them. Joe Hubener has improved since being thrown into the starter role after Jesse Ertz was injured very early on in the season opener. Hubener has looked decent, but the last two games saw him and his offense getting off to a slow start, and struggling to make plays early on.

The defense looked solid in the first two games, but then gave up 33 points to LA Tech last Saturday. It was troubling to see the defense underperform against a non-conference opponent, but Jeff Driskell of the LA Tech Bulldogs did use to play quarterback for Florida. In other words, he’s not a terrible quarterback, and probably had played teams similar to K-State during his days in the swamp.
With Big 12 play quickly approaching, the Wildcats need to improve on both sides of the ball. Hubener needs to get better acquainted with his offense. He’s good when he’s able to run with the ball and use his legs, but he was limited in doing that this past weekend. If Hubener can start making plays on the ground again, the Wildcats will already be in better positions to win.
The main thing though is for the Wildcats to not beat themselves up. They’re a tough team, but they’ll be facing some tougher teams down the stretch, especially in the next few weeks. Here’s a look at KSU’s schedule for the next month:
- October 3rd – Oklahoma State (24)
- October 10th – TCU (3)
- October 17th – Oklahoma (15)
- October 24th – Texas
- October 31st – Baylor (5)
Four of the Wildcats’ five opponents coming up in the next month are ranked. This will not be an easy task for Bill Snyder’s crew, but if the defense can play how they did the first two weeks and keep opponents out of the end zone, it’ll make things easier for the offense to go out and perform to the best of their ability.
One thing’s for sure, the Kansas State football team has had an interesting start to the year. Let’s hope they can remain relevant these next few weeks, and maybe even earn a ranking.
