KC Royals Set To Crush Franchise Attendance Record
By Alec Tilson
The KC Royals set an all-time season attendance record Wednesday night when person number 2,477,701 walked through the gates at Kauffman Stadium, according to Jeff Deters of The Topeka Capital-Journal.
With six sure-to-be-packed home games remaining at The K, the Royals and fans are set to shatter the previous record set in 1989.
It’s not all that surprising if you’ve attended a Royals game at Kauffman Stadium this season.
The product on the field has been superb, the momentum has been continuous for five months, and Royals fans have answered the bell each and every night.
Kauffman Stadium is averaging 9,813 more fans each night than it did in 2014. The Houston Astros are second with an average of 4,728 more fans on a nightly basis than in 2014.
Coming off a World Series run in 2014, the team started the season 7-0 in 2015 and has given fans every reason to pack the house on a nightly basis.
The Royals have been sub-.500 for exactly zero days this season.
It’s been a perfect storm for owner David Glass, general manager Dayton Moore and the home-grown Royals roster.
Pitcher Danny Duffy summed up what the fan support has been like from a player’s perspective, according to Deter’s report:
"“They’re everything to us,” he said. “We feed off them. Not only have they been out more in numbers, they’ve been out more in noise. It’s cool. They do everything they can to get us a W, and it speaks to how this city is wired. You know that they welcome people who come here for any reason with open arms. And the hospitality here is second to none. It’s pure politeness, which is nice.”"
Here’s a cool statistic via Baseball-Reference.com: The Royals have seen a total difference of 726,160 fans from 2014 to 2015 (through Sept. 8).
That’s more than double any other team in Major League Baseball.
Kauffman Stadium is averaging 9,813 more fans each night than it did in 2014. The Houston Astros are second with an average of 4,728 more fans on a nightly basis than in 2014.
The Royals are eighth in the MLB in total attendance this season, according to ESPN.com. Right behind big-market clubs like the Yankees, Red Sox and Cubs.
It’s been said that winning cures a lot of things, and attendance numbers pretty much back that up.
If the KC Royals average 25,000 fans over the final six home games (a conservative estimate at best), they’ll break the all-time franchise record by roughly 200,000.
Keep in mind Kauffman Stadium’s capacity is 37,903.
Dodgers Stadium holds 56,000. Busch Stadium in St. Louis hold 46,861.
It’s been a historic season for Royals fans and there’s 22 regular-season games yet to be played. Party on, Wayne.
