As of now, it seems like the order of the rotation in the playoffs would be Johnny Cueto for game 1, Edinson Volquez for game 2, Yordano Ventura for game 3, and Danny Duffy for game 4. Obviously anything can happen between now and October, but that would be my preferred rotation at the moment.

Fans have worried about Cueto recently, but as I mentioned on his slide, all pitchers go through slumps. If Cueto is still struggling come October, then maybe he won’t be the number one starter, but that is the whole reason the Royals acquired him. I more than expect Cueto to pick it up and pitch the way we know he’s capable of.

If Ventura continues to pitch the way he has been lately, a case could easily be made to put him in the two spot instead of Volquez. Volquez has looked good all season, but Ventura has been striking batters out right and left. It’s been insane and a lot of fun to watch.

The last spot is between Danny Duffy and Kris Medlen. Medlen jumped into the rotation when Jeremy Guthrie struggled, but he hasn’t been a season long starter like Duffy. It’d be tough to merit putting Duffy against the crazy powerful right-handed batters of Toronto, but he’s still a better option at the moment.
