KC Chiefs: Should Chase Daniel Be An NFL Starter?

facebooktwitterreddit

Chase Daniel Has Done More Than Just Impress Chiefs Fans This Preseason.

So far this preseason, Chase Daniel has been very good for the Kansas City Chiefs when he has come in to relieve starter Alex Smith and play with the second team.

The question has started to come up during Chiefs’ broadcasts and across the NFL world if Daniel is actually good enough to be an NFL starting caliber quarterback somewhere.

Obviously with the Chiefs, they have a long-term quarterback in Alex Smith and barring any significant injury, he should be the starting quarterback for years to come in Kansas City.

  • Chase Daniel can definitely throw the ball. Even if you haven’t seen him play much other than the first two preseason games, in those two games he has gone 29/33 with almost 300 yards, 4 touchdowns, and 0 interceptions, while really connecting with his young and new receivers.

Daniel is a strong leader in the huddle and is a beast in the classroom. If you watch these preseason games closely, you can tell he knows where EVERYBODY needs to be on every play and even puts guys in the right spot if they line up incorrectly.

He is very intelligent, and doesn’t make the mistake of a lot of younger quarterbacks, which is staring down his receiver that he intends to throw to. Daniel has learned the art of looking off safeties and corners over his time with the Chiefs and also his time in New Orleans with Drew Brees, Sean Payton, and co. Some of the best offensive minds in football.

The real question is could he make it as a starter on a team that needs one?

In my opinion, I think the answer is yes.

With guys like Geno Smith, Ryan Fitzpatrick, Matt Cassel (barf), and Josh McCown starting on their respective teams, it wouldn’t surprise me if Chiefs general manager John Dorsey gets a few calls regarding a trade for Chase.

Now that we have established that he could be a viable starting quarterback for some teams, we have to consider if it is likely or even possible that John Dorsey and head coach Andy Reid would consider trading their backup QB.

Simply put, I think the answer is yes, they would trade him if they got the right package in return.

The Chiefs are a good team, but still have some glaring weaknesses, such as cornerback, wide receiver, and the offensive line, so acquiring someone at those positions along with a draft pick or two and I think we could see Chase Daniel in a different uniform in the near future.

As for the Chiefs roster without Daniel, they would be left with second-year quarterback Aaron Murray out of Georgia and reserve Tyler Bray along with Alex Smith as the starter.

If the Chiefs can get ample compensation in return for Daniel, I don’t see any reason why they wouldn’t at least consider dealing him for the right price as soon as the next few weeks.
