KC Royals News: Johnny Cueto And Ned Yost

The Kansas City Royals will go for the three-game sweep tonight after a dominating 6-1 win over the Detroit Tigers.

Last night, the KC Royals proved again to be one of the most talented teams in the MLB. They’re deep, they play fast and actually appear to be getting stronger. The Royals have seven more wins and five fewer losses than any team in the American League.

Starting pitcher Yordano Ventura pitched six scoreless innings, struck out 8 and picked up his seventh victory on the season. He walked six batters, but his two hits allowed was a season-low, and Ventura’s first scoreless outing since May 19th. (Stats via ESPN.com)

A Jarrod Dyson and Alcides Escobar relay threw out a runner at the plate, and a Salvador Perez pick-off throw to Eric Hosmer caught a baserunner leading off at first base. The bullpen allowed a run, but the top arms had the night off with a 5-1 lead. (Source: MLB.com)

Lorenzo Cain was 4-for-4 and a triple short of the cycle. Mike Moustakas broke an 0-for-18 slump with a two-run home run in the same inning.

Despite a misplayed ball by Ben Zobrist at second base, last night was basically a Royals’ clinic on winning baseball.

Tonight it’s Edinson Volquez, then the Los Angeles Angels for four games at Kauffman Stadium starting Thursday. Here’s the latest Royals links from the web.

KC Royals: Kansas City Still Not A Baseball Town [Leigh Oleszczak – KC Kingdom]

"A loss in football you think about for an entire week (or longer sometimes) and that’s what Royals fans are doing. They’re making a bigger deal out of losses than need be."

KC Royals: Is Kyle Zimmer Part Of The October Plan? [John Viril – Kings of Kauffman]

"The soon-to-be 24-year-old Zimmer has always had the stuff. Scouts think he’s got the best arm in the system. Scoutbook.com cites Kyle Zimmer’s 98 mph fastball as his calling card, a pitch which has both good movement and late life. That makes him effective against hitters from both sides of the plate."

Kansas City Royals Johnny Cueto Quickly Becoming Fan Favorite [David Hill – Kings of Kauffman]

"In that outing, Cueto gave the Royals, and their fanbase, a glimpse at that piece that was missing last season. As much as James Shields meant to the Royals and helped guide them into being a winning ballclub once again, he just was not on the same level as Madison Bumgarner. Now, the Royals have a pitcher that allows them to match ace for ace, a stopper that can turn the momentum of a playoff series."

KC Royals: Most Disliked Rival Players In 2015 [Leigh Oleszczak – KC Kingdom]

"The beef with Chris Sale comes from one game this season, which took place back in April.Sale squared off against Yordano Ventura in a late April match-up that really began the Royals/White Sox rivalry this season and things got pretty heated to say the least."

Tracking The Royals Rapid Transformation From 2014 Darlings To 2015 Punks [Jacob Shafer – Bleacher Report]

"Again, though, a club can only be in the midst of so many benches-clearing incidents before it starts to gain a reputation. So where is this coming from? What led Kansas City—which last year streaked to the World Series as America’s underdog darling—to turn heel?"

Ned Yost Does Ice Bucket Challenge With Help From Salvador Perez [Pete Grathoff – The Kansas City Star]

"In a news release last month, Major League Baseball announced that “its 30 clubs, in partnership with the ALS community, will participate in the return of the #ALSIceBucketChallenge. Throughout the month of August, each club will host its own challenge and will then challenge another franchise, along with two other local personalities or organizations, to partake.”"

Brad Ausmus Says Johnny Cueto Stopping In Windup [ESPN]

"Ausmus complained to plate umpire Joe West that Cueto’s delivery was illegal and later offered his thoughts to reporters, saying Cueto was stopping in his windup.“Really, the way the rule reads, you’re not supposed to even alter your motion,” Ausmus said. “That’s the way the rule reads. They don’t enforce it. Well, he said if he stops it’s an illegal pitch.”"

AL Manager Of The Year Watch: A.J. Hinch, Ned Yost Top Crowded Field [Matt Snyder – CBS Sports]

"Yost vs. Hinch would be a very interesting vote right now. Voters tend to love exceeding expectations and improving over recent history. The Royals are exceeding expectations and will improve on last season’s win total, but would the Royals’ run to the World Series tilt things toward Hinch and the Astros’ major turnaround? I think it would, but I could be wrong."

Back Tightness No Concern For Davis, Royals [KCRoyals.com]

"“It’s not serious,” Yost said.Still, the Royals are being extra cautious with Davis, arguably one of the game’s top two or three relievers. With an 11 1/2 game lead in the American League Central, there is no need for the Royals and Yost to rush Davis back."
