KC Sports Bracketology: The Final Showdown

facebooktwitterreddit

It’s the moment you’ve all been waiting for… The final showdown in the KC Sports Bracketology tournament.

Mike Norris started the KC sports bracketology a few weeks ago and the purpose of it was to find out which season in Kansas City sports history rules all. Which season outdoes them all in the entirety of Kansas City sports?

Kansas City is fortunate to have a wide variety of sports teams to root for. There are the pro teams in the Kansas City Royals, the Kansas City Chiefs, and Sporting Kansas City, all of whom have captured the heart of this city at one point or another during the past few years.

The city also has three local colleges in the Kansas Jayhawks, Kansas State Wildcats, and Missouri Tigers. A lot of Jayhawk and Tiger fans look down on the Wildcats, but Kansas State had an impressive run during this tournament whereas none of the Tigers teams made it out of the first round.

The final four saw the 1985 Kansas City Royals absolutely demolishing the 1969 Kansas City Chiefs, which was a little surprising honestly. Both of these teams won it all, but I guess Royals fever is in full effect in Kansas City.

The Royals won this round 126 votes to only 34 votes on the Chiefs’ end. I figured the Chiefs would put up more of a fight considering that’s the only time they’ve won the Super Bowl in the team’s 55-year history.

Then again, the Royals’ 1985 World Series victory was their only championship in the team’s history as well so it’s a hard decision as to which one meant more. Perhaps the more recent victory was key.

The 1985 Royals will be facing the 2013 Sporting Kansas City squad, who won the MLS Cup that year.

Sporting Kansas City absolutely dismantled their Final Four opponent, the 2007-2008 Kansas Jayhawks basketball squad 157 votes to 42 votes.

  • Don’t overlook this matchup Royals fans. Soccer is big in Kansas City and SKC’s fans have voted them all the way to the final round.

Kansas City has become the biggest soccer spot in the United States, which has been proven with all of the shots of Power and Light during both the men’s and women’s World Cup the past two summers.

Sporting fans have only added to that title, as the fans in the Cauldron are loud and supportive all throughout each and every match.

Sporting won the 2013 title off of penalty kicks, which was incredibly nerve-wracking, but exciting nonetheless. Anytime your city wins a title in anything (well, anything good) is exciting.

The question with the fans of Kansas City sports now is which season was better in the eyes of the fans? Royals or Sporting? Baseball or soccer? 1985 or 2013? Home runs or penalty kicks? George Brett or Jimmy Nielsen?

Time for the fans to pick which season holds up as the best in all of Kansas City sports history.

Voting expires on Thursday, August 13th at 5:00 PM central time.

    Happy voting!
