KC Royals: Kansas City Still Not A Baseball Town

facebooktwitterreddit

Despite how good the KC Royals have been in 2015, Kansas City is still not a baseball town. At least not yet anyway.

The Kansas City Royals have a lengthy lead in the American League Central and even a decent lead for home field advantage throughout the playoffs. So why isn’t Kansas City a baseball town yet then Leigh?

Well I’ll tell you why.

What I’ve noticed listening to people talk about Royals baseball or tweet about Royals baseball or what have you is that people put way too much football mentality into each game. Yes, it sucks to lose, but sometimes whenever the Royals lose, I see fans cussing and carrying on on social media like the world just ended.

It’s one game.

I am as big a Kansas City fan as they come. I love my city and the sports teams that come with it, but when I look at the big picture, the Chiefs are still the center of Kansas City’s attention.

Unlike football, baseball games go on almost every day and therefore it’s impossible to win every single game. I still don’t think Kansas City fans have grasped that concept just yet. I think the fans around here have the football mentality about baseball and take a loss like a loss is in football.

A loss in football you think about for an entire week (or longer sometimes) and that’s what Royals fans are doing. They’re making a bigger deal out of losses than need be.

I get that it sucks to lose, but the KC Royals are a good team. I still feel like fans don’t believe in the Royals or know enough about baseball to understand that the Royals are pretty darn good. The Royals are 22 games over .500 yet there are still people doubting them. It’s frustrating.

I listened to 610 on Sunday morning and a caller was griping about Ned Yost giving Lorenzo Cain and Mike Moustakas a day off, saying that Yost was “conceding” that day’s game (which the Royals ended up winning for what it’s worth). This is where you can see the lack of baseball knowledge creep in and where that football mentality sets in.

The Royals are up 11.5  games over the Minnesota Twins in the division so why not rest some of the better players when you’ve already won the series? Cain and Moose are human and need days to rest. You can’t expect them to go out there and play every day ESPECIALLY when your team is winning the division by 11 games!

  • I am as big a Kansas City fan as they come. I love my city and the sports teams that come with it, but when I look at the big picture, the Chiefs are still the center of Kansas City’s attention. More than anything else because it’s football and football leads all most of the time, but especially at Arrowhead Stadium.

People in Kansas City love the Royals right now, but if the boys in blue don’t bring home a World Series title this season and drop off in the next few years, do you really think people will still flock out to the K every day? I don’t.

Kansas City has always been a football city, and that’s common knowledge. Kansas City also has become the soccer capital of America, as the Sporting Kansas City fan base is insanely loyal. Both the Chiefs and Sporting (/Wizards) have had some very good seasons in the past 20 years whereas the Royals have only had a few.

I get that this is an exciting time for Kansas City and everyone wants to be apart of this winning spirit that the Kansas City Royals are putting forward, but let’s face it KC… We’re still a football city and will be until proven otherwise.
