KC Chiefs News: Training Camp And Will Shields
By Alec Tilson
The Kansas City Chiefs finished its first week of training camp. Here’s what we’ve learned from those few practices and media sessions.
The KC Chiefs training camp is underway and the pads are on. Fans are excited about the little things; training camp interceptions, long-snapper position battles, and which undrafted rookies could make the Chiefs’ 2015 roster. And who could blame them, we haven’t had Chiefs football in six months.
The Chiefs released the first depth chart of the season, and there’s not many surprises, according to Adam Teicher of ESPN. Eric Berry is listed as the second string free safety behind Husain Abdullah, and Ron Parker is listed as the first string strong safety. With seemingly just a few true position battles, this gives Chiefs fans a solid sense of how the roster will shape up.
Tonight, Chiefs legend Will Shields will be inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame as part of the 2015 class. He never missed a game in his 224-game NFL career and is a much-deserved inductee. He was inducted into the Kansas City Chiefs Hall of Fame during the 2012 season.
The Chiefs first preseason game is on August 15th against the Arizona Cardinals at University of Phoenix Stadium. Until then, let the training camp games continue.

Ron Jaworski Ranks Alex Smith In Top Half Of NFL Quarterbacks [Leigh Olesczcak – KC Kingdom]
"Since coming to the Kansas City Chiefs during the 2013 offseason, Smith has gone an impressive 19-11 in two seasons. He hasn’t always been a perfect quarterback, in fact, no one would say he’s been anywhere close to perfect, but Smith is the type of quarterback that doesn’t lose you games."
The AFC West Got A Whole Lot Tougher [Tarek Mavani – Arrowhead Addict]
"For the 2015 Kansas City Chiefs to compete for a Super Bowl, they kind of have to win their first playoff game in 21 years. A good way to improve the chances of that happening? Ending the Denver Broncos four-year reign as AFC West champions. As the saying goes, easier said than done, especially when you consider the Chiefs have been division champs only twice in the new millennium, lowest amongst the division."
KC Chiefs: Will Shields Set To Enter Hall of Fame [Alec Tilson – KC Kingdom]
"He started 223 consecutive games over his 14-season career with the Chiefs. Con-sec-u-tive. Twelve Pro Bowls from 1995-2006. Two-time First-Team All-Pro selection. The most career games started – forget consecutive, just games started – by an active offensive lineman in the NFL is 203 games by longtime Lions’ center Dominic Raiola, according to Pro-Football-Reference. Emmit Smith didn’t start as many career games as Will Shields did. Champ Bailey? Twenty fewer starts than Shields. Reggie White is a good one – he started five more games than Shields did."
Fantasy Football Tight Ends: Top 15 To Target In 2015 [Mark Kanter – KC Kingdom]
"After sitting out his rookie season in 2013 with a knee injury, Travis Kelce came on strong in 2014, scoring five touchdowns and putting up the sixth most yards (862) of all tight ends. More importantly, for tight ends with 50+ receptions, his 12.9 yards per catch ranked behind only Fleener, Walker, and Gronkowski.Kansas City Chiefs"

Jets, Chiefs, Eagles Boast Most Improved Secondaries in NFL [Bucky Brooks – NFL.com]
"It is hard to suggest that the Chiefs‘ secondary, which ranked second against the pass in 2014, will be even better this season, but that’s how I see it. The return of Pro Bowl safety Eric Berry and the addition of first-round pick Marcus Peters could make the unit nearly impossible to throw on this fall."
Chiefs’ Eric Berry Makes Great Diving Interception At Training Camp [Kyle Newport – Bleacher Report]
"Berry, who missed the end of last season after being diagnosed with Hodgkin’s lymphoma, was recently cleared to return to practice. The three-time Pro Bowler has already returned to form early on in training camp."
Kansas City Chiefs Have Nearly $9 Million in Cap Space [Joel Thorman – Arrowhead Pride]
"The NFLPA’s salary cap report has the Kansas City Chiefs with nearly $9 million in salary cap space. The exact cap space for the Chiefs according to the NFLPA’s report is $8,793,884, which is a good amount to have heading into the season."
The Life And Career Of Chiefs LBs Coach Gary Gibbs [BJ Kissel – KCChiefs.com]
"Even with a résumé that includes having coached three linebackers who have earned Pro Bowl honors on 10 different occasions over the past four seasons, don’t expect Kansas City Chiefs linebackers coach Gary Gibbs to take much credit. With talent the likes of Tamba Hali, Derrick Johnson and Justin Houston to work with, Gibbs explained that he’s simply a teacher."
