KC Chiefs: Chiefs Projected To Select Quarterback In Early Mock Draft

facebooktwitterreddit

Next year’s draft isn’t for another ten months, but it’s still fun to speculate about who the KC Chiefs might end up taking with their first round pick. Erik Lambert of NFL Mocks took part in a 2016 NFL Mock Draft, and had the Chiefs selecting a quarterback in the first round.

  • Lambert projected the Kansas City Chiefs drafting Jared Goff out of California with the 21st overall pick (which is another story in itself). Here is what Lambert had to say about his pick,

"How much longer can the Kansas City Chiefs justify riding it out with Alex Smith? He’s a smart football player and protects the ball so well, but it’s become clear the team has reached its ceiling with him under center. They have to try for a quarterback who can unlock the full potential of that offense.Jared Goff has those tools. He has size and mobility but his calling card is a strong arm with tremendous accuracy that allows him to pinpoint his passes down the field and still avoid throwing many interceptions. Andy Reid would love him."

I get that not everyone is crazy about Alex Smith, but I still think it’d be dumb to draft a quarterback in the first round unless it’s a guy like Andrew Luck who only shows up once every ten years or so. Now if Smith under performs in 2015 with the talent that’s been put around him, I might be all for drafting someone, but as of right now, I’d vote to take one in MAYBE the second round at the earliest.

    Jared Goff can play though.

He has had two impressive seasons under center for the Golden Bears of California. Just last year, Goff tossed for just under 4,000 yards and 35 touchdowns to only seven interceptions. 35 touchdowns! That’s insane.

The other part of this article I want to touch on is that Lambert had the Chiefs picking 21st overall, meaning they’d make the playoffs in his scenario (he had the Broncos drafting behind the Chiefs, so I guess he doesn’t buy that the Chiefs will win the AFC West in 2015).

Again, it’s really way too early to be talking about next year’s draft, but I found it interesting to see someone projecting the KC Chiefs to go after a quarterback in the first round. Lambert had five total quarterbacks going in the first round, with Kansas City selecting the fifth out of five.

What do you think Chiefs Kingdom? Would it be wise for the Kansas City Chiefs to select a quarterback in the first round next year?
