KC Royals: Royals Head To All-Star Break With Win

The KC Royals are officially on a four day break, as the MLB All-Star Game festivities are set to begin on Monday. The Royals have had a fun start to the season, and sit 18 games over .500 at 52-34 with a four and a half game lead in the American League Central and just finished their most recent home stand with an 8-3 record.

Not too shabby for a team that many thought would fall off after their World Series appearance last year.

The past week saw the Royals climb some tough obstacles, but the boys in blue bounced back and have finished with an above .500 record at the All-Star break.

Even in one of the Royals’ worst games of the season, a game in which the pitching and defense faltered, the team still prevailed in an 11-10 victory over the Toronto Blue Jays on Sunday. This was a game that saw the Kansas City Royals tack on six runs in the first inning and another in the fifth, to then surrender that lead in the sixth.

It was one of those games that seemed like it was in the bag for sure. Edinson Volquez was the starter on the mound and we all know how great he’s been this season. Ryan Madson struggled though, as did the defense, and when Toronto took the lead in a sixth inning that felt like it lasted YEARS, I found myself wondering how badly this game could affect the team should the Royals indeed lose.

As bad of a game as this was to watch, it showed that even on one of the KC Royals’ worst days, they still have the ability to win, and that goes a long way.

Fortunately, this team has a fight in them like none other, and went out to knock in four more runs and get that win right before the All-Star break. It was a huge win because losing a game right before the All-Star break after a seven run lead would have been a devastating way to end the first half of the season.

The defense had a terrible day, allowing four errors (the Blue Jays had three), and while Volquez pitched fine, the bullpen (mainly Ryan Madson) struggled and allowed Toronto to come back and later stay in the game.

As bad of a game as this was to watch (and trust me, I was in attendance), it showed that even on one of the KC Royals’ worst days, they still have the ability to win, and that goes a long way.

All of that said, the Kansas City Royals had an impressive home stand to close out the first half of the season and still have a four and a half game lead in the American League Central. Let’s just hope they can keep this momentum going and finish strong!
