KC Royals: Alex Gordon Leaves Game With Groin Injury

Alex Gordon went down near the left field wall Wednesday night while chasing after a fly ball in the fourth inning against the Tampa Bay Rays.

Gordon was down for several minutes before he was finally carted off the field by Royals training staff.

It appeared that Gordon may have hurt his knee or ankle, but reports from the KC Royals television broadcast around 8:35 p.m. said the all-star has an apparent groin strain.

Shortly after the injury Royals Twitter was full of speculation — and a little humor.

There certainly was a sigh of relief when it was announced it was not a severe knee injury, or worse, an Achilles tear. However, as KC Star reporter Andy McCullough said above, there is no mention of how severe the groin injury is.

A strain is no fun (usually a 2-4 week timetable), but a tear would be even worse. Even though the team is saying it’s a strain, it doesn’t mean the MRI results, as reported by Royals’ TV announcer Steve Physioc, won’t come back with a more severe diagnosis.

Gordon’s injury is just one in a long line for the Royals this season including ones to pitchers Danny Duffy, Yordano Ventura and Jason Vargas, outfielder Alex Rios and short stop Alcides Escobar.

The injury brings to question whether Gordon will be able to take his place in the outfield as a starter for the American League in the all-star game next week.

Of course, that game is nowhere near as important as the 80 that still remain on the schedule. Although his .269 batting average is not exactly where Royals’ fans would like it to be, Gordon is coming off a seven-hit day Tuesday in a double-header sweep of the Rays.

We all know how important his glove is, and whomever replaces Gordon for however long will not be able to cover the same amount of real estate as the back-to-back-to-back-to-back Gold Glove winner from Lincoln, Neb.

For now, fans will have to sit back and wait for the news — which is hopefully good. However, with all the injuries this season the Royals seem to bounce back, and still hold the best record in the AL.

In fact, even tonight Kansas City showed perseverance. The Rays ended up with a run on the infamous play to tie the game at two, and eventually took a 3-2 lead. However, the Royals fought back and scored five runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to take a 7-3 lead.
