Summary:

Although Royals fans know how important Escobar is to the team, most would probably admit he isn’t a shoe-in All-Star selection. That being said, his numbers are there with the best of them.

Among AL second baseman qualifiers, and Escobar still is despite missing games for two separate injuries, his .295 batting average trails only Oakland’s Marcus Semien — and he’s committed 16 errors to Escobar’s five. He’s only hit 22 home runs in 7-plus Big League seasons, so the power will never be there. However, his 15 RBI are tied for second among AL second basemen, his .331 .OBP is second, and .388 slugging percentage is fourth.

Will he or won’t he?

Escobar is another borderline Royal when it comes to the All-Star game. They can’t have the entire infield there, and Perez and Hosmer are virtual locks. He still has a chance though. Semien has the best overall numbers, but he’s not a household name, which hurts in fan voting. In fact, there aren’t many AL second baseman who are, something that may play in to Escobar’s favor.

Voting has already begun and you can cast your votes here. MLB should release its first voting numbers sometime in the coming week. By then we’ll have an idea of where the Royals infielders stand.

Stay tuned for a write-up on the Kansas City outfielders tomorrow.
