KC Chiefs: Expectations For Day Two Of 2015 NFL Draft

facebooktwitterreddit

On Thursday night, the KC Chiefs went defense with their first round pick for the second year in a row when they selected cornerback Marcus Peters 18th overall. At least this year, cornerback was a need for the Chiefs unlike last year when they selected linebacker Dee Ford 23rd overall despite having two of the best in the biz in Tamba Hali and Justin Houston.

If the Chiefs want a player, they might have to trade up and get rid of a pick to get him. That’s just the way the draft works sometimes.

As for the second round, which begins at 6:00 PM central time on Friday, the Kansas City Chiefs have three total picks (as of right now, they could decide to trade up or trade their existing picks for more picks later on).

The three spots the Chiefs are picking at are 49th (second round), 80th (third round), and 98th (third round). The Chiefs must address the key positions, and they might have to trade up to do so.

For instance, if the Kansas City Chiefs want to land a top wide receiver, they can do with Jaelen Strong or – as much as I hate to say it- Dorial Green-Beckham, they won’t have much luck with either of those guys falling to them with the 49th overall pick.

I wanted the Chiefs to trade up for DeVante Parker during the first round, but instead they stayed put, addressed a need at cornerback, and now have to hope they can land a receiver in the second round. They could potentially land Tyler Lockett in the third round, but that’s certainly not guaranteed.

Another option for the Chiefs to go in is for Eric Kendricks out of UCLA. Kendrick is an inside linebacker, arguably the best in the draft, and is still available after round one. Kansas City needs help with stopping the run and Kendricks could be the guy to help out in that department. He’s another prospect they might have to consider trading up to get, however, the chances of him being on the board at pick 49 are more likely than Strong’s or DGB’s.

  • I also wouldn’t mind seeing the KC Chiefs go after a tight end on Friday evening. Yes, they have Travis Kelce, who is a rising star in the NFL, but the need for a number two tight end is definitely there. Anthony Fasano was released this past off season, and I’m sorry, but Richard Gordon and Demetrius Harris are not the long-term answers at tight end.

If Kansas City opts for a tight end, they could easily get a great talent in the second round with Maxx Williams or in the third round with Clive Walford. These two are the top tight end prospects this year, and the Chiefs should take advantage of the fact that they’re still available heading into round two. Williams will likely be off the board when the Chiefs are on the clock, but Walford is still an option for sure.

Last, but not least, we go back to the position that killed this team last year, which is along the offensive line. I’m still scratching my head at the Chiefs not taking Cameron Erving with the 18th pick, but they didn’t, and I have to get over that. They really should address the o-line at some point during Friday night, whether it be T.J. Clemmings, Jake Fisher, or A.J. Cann, just get someone to help protect the quarterback.

Long story short, if the Kansas City Chiefs can use their three picks on an inside linebacker, offensive lineman, tight end, or wide receiver, fans will feel pretty comfortable after three rounds of the draft. If the Chiefs want a player, they might have to trade up and get rid of a pick to get him. That’s just the way the draft works sometimes.
