Wichita State Shockers: Kings Of Kansas
The Wichita State Shockers pulled off the upset on Sunday evening when they were able to defeat the second seeded Kansas Jayhawks by a score of 78 to 65. The Shockers never trailed in the second half of the game and overall played a terrific game.
Now I know that claiming the Shockers as the “Kings of Kansas” might be a bit of an exaggeration since Kansas faces tougher teams, but still. Wichita State was the lower seed and came out of Omaha with the win against the favored Jayhawks. Not only that, but Wichita State won the game by double digits.
I had a good feeling about the Shockers being able to pull the “upset” off, but the Jayhawks looked decent early on in the game and led until right before half time when Wichita State pulled ahead 29-26 headed to the locker room.

Now the Wichita State Shockers will head to the Sweet Sixteen to face the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. Notre Dame knocked off the Butler Bulldogs on Saturday night in a thrilling overtime game that showed just how tough the Fighting Irish are.
Obviously Ron Baker and Fred Van Vleet had great games as usual, but Tekele Cotton and Evan Wessel also had nice days. Cotton led the team in scoring with 17 points while Wessel nailed down the three pointers all game long. He had four on the day, according to ESPN.com.
This game proved just how good the Wichita State Shockers are and how they deserved to be seeded higher than a seven. While the Kansas Jayhawks might not have been the team they usually are, they’re still the Kansas Jayhawks, and Wichita State should very much have bragging rights over this game. Plus, who knows when these two teams will meet again?
As mentioned earlier, the Shockers will travel to Cleveland, Ohio to face the Notre Dame Fighting Irish on Thursday in the Sweet Sixteen. It is not going to be an easy feat facing the Irish, as they have senior Jerian Grant, who is a terrific player for Notre Dame. Grant is a senior who is just aching to get his Fighting Irish to the National Championship. To do so, he’ll have to get through these tough Wichita State Shockers.
If Wichita State defeats Notre Dame, there’s a chance that they’ll have to face Kentucky in the Elite Eight. The Wildcats knocked WSU out of the NCAA Tournament last year in the round of 32.
As for now though, Wichita State fans should enjoy this moment. The last time these two teams played was in 1993, and the Jayhawks completely demolished the Shockers by over 40 points. Not this time though. This time, the Wichita State Shockers prevailed by 13 points and are moving on to the Sweet Sixteen.
