Wichita State Shockers Face Indiana In Second Round
The Wichita State Shockers kick off their 2015 NCAA Tournament when they play the 10th ranked Indiana Hoosiers on Friday. The Shockers received a seventh seed in the Midwest, and many felt that the team deserved a higher ranking, as they won the Missouri Valley Conference. WSU, however, didn’t win the Missouri Valley tournament, which hurt them in the long run.

While this year’s Shocker team lost a few games on the way to the Big Dance, they still have a lot to be proud of and could most definitely make it past the Hoosiers on Friday. For one, they’re the youngest team in the tournament according to Fox Sports.
Second, the Shockers are bringing back a lot of members from the 2013-2014 undefeated squad. Indiana lost a lot of its big time players. Indiana on the other hand, has lost several members from last year. That definitely gives Wichita State the edge in what should be a good game.
The No. 10 Hoosiers (20-13) have lost nine of their last 14. They have eight freshmen, tied with Louisville for most among tournament teams. Their average experience of 1.73 years per player is lowest in the tournament, according to STATS. Only junior point guard Kevin “Yogi” Ferrell played significant minutes in Indiana’s last NCAA appearance in 2013.

Shocker fans definitely want to see their team do better than they did in last year’s NCAA Tournament, when they didn’t make it out of the round of 32. Wichita State had gone undefeated during the regular season and then lost to the Kentucky Wildcats in the third round of March Madness.
This year is a different story though. WSU experienced a few losses, including one to Illinois State during the Missouri Valley Conference. That loss ended up allowing Northern Iowa to win the tournament and receive a higher ranking than the Shockers. Sure, Wichita State deserved higher than a seven seed, but winning the conference and the conference tournament is keys to getting higher seeds. Wichita State just didn’t execute.
The bigger story in all of this though is what happens if the Shockers win on Friday. Well, assuming the Kansas Jayhawks handle New Mexico State in the first game of the day, that would set up a Sunflower state showdown on Sunday.
That’s right.
The Wichita State Shockers and Kansas Jayhawks would face off for the first time since 1993, according to Rustin Dodd of the Kansas City Star. It’s been 22 year since these two Kansas universities played each other, and I think everyone in the area is anticipating this matchup.
First thing’s first though. The Wichita State Shockers must take care of business against the Indiana Hoosiers in order to make that Sunflower state showdown a reality.
Wichita State plays Indiana at 1:45 central time in Omaha, Nebraska. The game will be broadcasted on CBS.
