We are happy to welcome Collin Stirling to our KC Kingdom writing family.
Collin will be working to expand our coverage for several team, including the Kansas City Royals, the Kansas City Chiefs, and the Kansas Jayhawks. We couldn’t be happier to have him writing for KC Kingdom.
Collin Stirling has already produced a terrific article, breaking down some of the NFL free agents the KC Chiefs should avoid. Keep an eye for his upcoming look at the Kansas Jayhawks’s amazing streak of 11 consecutive Big 12 Conference titles.
Like all of the new writers to KC Kingdom, Collin Stirling took a few minutes to answer eight questions so we can get to know him just a little better. Here are his answers to those eight questions:
How did you become a fan of the team you’re covering?
I’ve been a fan of the Chiefs, Royals, and Jayhawks my entire life. When I was a child, I used to get scared when my mom and dad would yell at Priest Holmes to run the ball or for the Royals to hit the ball. The Jayhawks were a little bit different. I didn’t really become diehard fan of the Jayhawks until I attended KU from 2010-2012.
Where did you grow up and where do you currently live?
I’m a born-and-raised Kansas City guy. Specifically, I was born at Providence in Kansas City, Kansas and have lived all but two years of my life in Bonner Springs, KS. Those two years I didn’t live in Bonner Springs I was living in Lawrence.
What is your college/educational background?
I am currently in my very last semester of college. I go to the University of Missouri – Kansas City and am pursuing a Bachelor of Science in chemistry. Before UMKC, I attended KU for two years and tried to pursue a degree in chemical engineering. I discovered after two years that engineering was something that takes a different breed of human to do. It’s really exciting to be the first in my family to graduate from a university.
What do you do for a living?
As of right now, I am a package loader/trailer switcher at FedEx Ground and go to school full time. Typically, my work hours are 12am – 7am.
Do you have a family?
I currently do not have any children, but I am in a long-term relationship. Within the next few months, my girlfriend and I plan to move out into either a nicer apartment or even a house.
What do you like to do for fun (sports related or otherwise)
Usually I’ll play video games or teach myself a song on the guitar. When it’s nice outside and I can get a decent sized group of people together I’ll go to our local high school field and play either football or ultimate Frisbee.
My absolute favorite thing to do in my free time is attend rock and metal concerts. I’ve seen so many bands that I have an Excel file to keep tabs on how many I’ve seen and how many times I have seen them. Currently my count is that I’ve seen 75 bands a total of 125 times. I. Love. Concerts.
What are your least favorite team(s) and why?
My two least favorite sports teams are the Oakland Raiders and the Missouri Tigers. I dislike the Raiders because of their tendency of being the most penalized team in the NFL year after year. My dislike for the Tigers stems from the fact I’m a life-long KU fan (Rock Chalk!).
What is your favorite sports moment or memory?
I will never forget watching the 2008 NCAA Championship finals. I was a junior in high school and I was in my room doing physics homework. As the end of regulation drew near, I had to put my homework down and watch. As Mario Chalmers got in position at the top of the arc, I yelled at my TV for them to pass it to Mario. As the shot flew to the basket, I held my breath.
I threw my papers everywhere when the shot went in. I went for round two of the homework shower when the Jayhawks prevailed in the end. My homework was never finished and when my teacher asked me what happened I replied with, “Greatness happened. Greatness that I got to witness.” I subsequently failed that homework assignment. Worth it!
