Kansas City Chiefs: Ten Free Agents To Avoid

Brandon Spikes – Linebacker

In all honesty, acquiring Brandon Spikes could very well help the KC Chiefs’ weak run defense. Spikes is a very athletic and physical linebacker who seems to be around the line of scrimmage on most run plays. Now the reason that I say that the Chiefs should avoid him is because he lacks the stamina to be an effective run-stuffer on every down.

Along with the shaky stamina, Spikes has average speed for a linebacker and we’re in a new age of the NFL where the tight ends that run the crossing patterns are just as fast as wide receivers. With the re-signing of Josh Mauga and the return of Derrick Johnson, the Chiefs may be content with the speed of their linebackers.

Now I don’t think any of these players are necessarily bad but I think there is more risk than reward if the Chiefs pick them up. With a whopping 11 picks coming up in this year’s draft, the Chiefs possess the ability to draft a lot of key players that can add depth and contribute.

Like I said earlier, I love the free agency period of the NFL offseason. Tons of moves are made that can shake the foundation of a team and give us wonders about the next season. Let’s hope the KC Chiefs can pick up at least one or two key free agents to bolster our team.

Rolando McClain – Linebacker

I won’t lie; I was scratching my head when Dallas decided to sign Rolando McClain. He played poorly in Oakland and had retired at the young age of 23. He made a name for himself while playing as a middle linebacker in Dallas’ 4-3 scheme, playing well enough to be named as a Pro Bowl alternate.

Even with his new found glory, I really don’t feel the Kansas City Chiefs should even attempt to sign him because he strikes me as a fragile person. Sure, he kept it together last season but who’s to say that he doesn’t have more off-the-field issues with another team.

What do you think of my free agents to avoid?
