Brandon Flowers – Cornerback

As great as it would be to bring Brandon Flowers back to Kansas City, I think the Chiefs should pass. I still think that Flowers is a great corner, but it seems that there is always a nagging injury with him that limits how effective he is in a game.

More from Chiefs Free Agency

Another reason I don’t feel that the Chiefs should look to bring Flowers back is because his size is still an issue. In a division that sees larger receivers such as Demaryius Thomas, the 5-foot-9 corner will almost always be at a mismatch.

Buster Skrine – Cornerback

This situation is similar to Flowers’ in that Buster Skrine is an undersized corner. According to NFL.com, Skrine has been targeted by opposing quarterbacks more times than any other cornerback over the past two years. That came with a price as it seemed that Skrine was burned by opposing receivers fairly often.

With Sean Smith solidifying his status as a top-tier corner and Phillip Gaines becoming more effective in the passing game, there just isn’t any room for the 5-foot-8 corner in Bob Sutton’s defensive scheme.

Walter Thurmond – Cornerback

As a former member of the Legion of Boom, Walter Thurmond had an opportunity to learn from one of the best corners in the game today. Unfortunately, Thurmond hasn’t started more than three games in a season (and he’s in his sixth year in the league). This raises tons of red flags for teams, especially the Chiefs. KC Chiefs fans are no stranger to those instances of the injury bug wiping out our quality players.

Picking up a player that has a history of injuries throughout all but one of his years in the NFL is just asking to get burned. To end this on a bright note, he was an effective slot defender in his only healthy season.
