Perhaps some of my confidence in a long-term deal getting done is wishful thinking, but a significant portion of it comes from two other factors:

  1. There is no outfield help on the immediate horizon in the Royals minor league system. I mean NONE.  Jorge Bonifacio is still a couple years away, and Bubba Starling…well…let’s not talk about it.
  2. The Royals have pitched Gordon as the face of their franchise pretty hard, and if they were simply willing to let him walk because of an outdated and under-compensated contract, they’d look awfully foolish.
  3. Alex Gordon has become the face of this franchise. His hustle and grit make him a player all fans love to watch.

It wasn’t long ago that the second factor mentioned above wouldn’t have mattered. Winning cures all, and as we’ve seen, ownership has stepped up to the plate to provide financial backing with an eye on sustained success.

In short, it’s time to show Alex Gordon the money, and ensure that his career is painted only in Royal-blue.
