Kansas City Chiefs Waive A.J. Jenkins

Tuesday saw the Kansas City Chiefs making some moves, which included waiving wide receiver A.J. Jenkins, according to the Kansas City Chiefs’ official website. Donnie Avery was also let go from the team as well.

The move clears $1.34 million in 2015 cap space, according to website Over the Cap.

Jenkins was originally drafted by the San Francisco 49ers in 2012 with the 30th overall pick. He was a bust out there in the bay and the Niners sent him to Kansas City in exchange for Jonathan Baldwin (KC’s own version of Jenkins).

A.J. Jenkins didn’t fare much better in Kansas City. He played in 25 games, but only started in three of them.  Jenkins was targeted 32 times for 17 receptions for 223 yards and had zero touchdowns.

In fact, A.J. Jenkins has yet to score a touchdown during his pro career. He did come close though this past season when he caught a pass from Alex Smith and would have had a clear run to the end zone, except he stepped out-of-bounds on the way. Ugh.

Close doesn’t cut it though, and the Chiefs seemed to feel the same way. It was time for A.J. Jenkins to step up this past year and he didn’t do it. In three years in the NFL, Jenkins hasn’t lived up to his first round draft pick and now is being relieved from his second NFL team.

I’m sure A.J. Jenkins will find another home, as several teams have the need for a wide receiver, but as of now, he’s sure looking like a bust. On the flip side though, the Kansas City Chiefs didn’t lose out on anything with that trade, as Jonathan Baldwin is already out of the league.

Baldwin was more of a pain due to his attitude. A.J. Jenkins didn’t have an attitude, but he was injured frequently and never made big plays for a team that needed to see SOMETHING from their wide receiving corps.

So, now what?

Well, parting ways with Jenkins and Avery saves the Chiefs around $5 million in cap space and now it really means that John Dorsey must go out and find a wide receiver in free agency.

Perhaps we’ll see Randall Cobb or Jeremy Maclin come to Kansas City – or perhaps it won’t be as big of a name, but an experienced guy like Lance Moore. The Chiefs also have 11 draft picks so you can expect the team to use several of those on a young wide receiver.

Honestly, I don’t care which name comes to town, but it needs to be a guy ready to work and score some touchdowns.
