KC Royals: Which Missouri Team Will Be Better In 2015

facebooktwitterreddit

The KC Royals had a terrific season in 2014, going to the World Series for the first time since 1985. It was an exciting time to live in Kansas City and to be a Royals fan especially since Royals fans don’t typically get to enjoy that kind of success.

Kansas City Royals fans are used to living in the shadow of the St. Louis Cardinals, who always seem to be making it to the playoffs and often make it to the World Series as well. The Cardinals last won a World Series in 2011, but made it to the championship again in 2013, eventually losing to the Boston Red Sox in six games.

Growing up in Kansas City, I’ve never been a fan of any St. Louis teams. Their fans are arrogant and just overall annoying and it was such a joy to watch the Royals make it further than the Cardinals for once and to be the more dominant team in the MLB.

What’s the point of all of this you ask? David Schoenfield of ESPN.com compared the two and asked, which team is better? Schoenfield went through both teams and compared their positions and which player was better in that particular position.

Schoenfield seemed to think that the Cardinals would have the edge in 2015 over the Royals. His main reasoning was that the Kansas City Royals are a team without power. He also questioned if guys like Jeremy Guthrie and Jason Vargas would have similar seasons.

Position wise, Schoenfield leaned more towards the Cardinals in general. He felt the Royals had the better first baseman (Eric Hosmer versus Matt Adams and Mark Reynolds), left field (Alex Gordon versus Matt Holliday), center field (Lorenzo Cain versus Jon Jay), number three pitcher (Danny Duffy versus Michael Wacha), and the bullpen.

The other positions went in St. Louis’ favor according to Schoenfield, which isn’t too surprising. The Cardinals almost always make it into the postseason and are always contenders to make it to the World Series once they get to the playoffs.

It’s worth noting that the Royals took the series from the Cardinals when they won three games to one in their annual meeting during the summer. In fact, the KC Royals swept the Cardinals in St. Louis and it was pretty funny. I would love to see the Royals be the better team this season, but it’s going to be tough for the boys in blue to repeat the success they had in 2014.

One thing’s for sure though, pitchers and catchers report to spring training in one week!
